Schuler Scholar Program

Schuler Scholar Program Newsblast
News from the SSP
February 2014
Greetings from Schuler!

This year has already brought exciting changes for Schuler, and I am pleased to share one of them with you today.
After meeting with half a dozen potential partners, last month we announced that in 2014 we will launch programs at  Richard T. Crane Medical Preparatory High School (Crane) and Zion-Benton Township High School District 126 (District 126). Crane, a CPS magnet school, offers a rigorous college prep curriculum focused on health sciences. District 126, comprised  of Zion-Benton Twp. H.S. and New Tech High @ZB East, serves a diverse population and is committed to lifelong learning in partnership with its community.

We selected Crane and District 126 as partners because, in addition to committing to a high level of collaboration, both offered Schuler unique opportunities for innovation. Our ability to bring the SSP model into a variety of high school settings allows us not only to impact more communities but to work alongside educators who are visionaries and share our commitment to Always Personal Best.

We appreciate your support of our growing program and hope you will enjoy reading these updates from the SSP.

All the best,

Candace A. Browdy, Executive Director

College Counseling Plans Spring Break Visits

Spring Break 2013: Scholars at Wake Forest University

The College Counseling team is excited to embark on Spring Break college visits with junior Scholars at the end of March. Lasting a full week with visits to eight to ten colleges and universities on each itinerary, these trips are a valuable opportunity for Scholars to expand their knowledge of schools as they go into senior year. After arriving in Baltimore together, we will split with one group heading north to Pennsylvania and Ohio and the other southward to Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. While prior research is an important step in the college search process for Scholars, no experience is as informative and meaningful for them as setting foot on campus and processing their surroundings. As a first year College Counselor with Schuler, I'm eager to witness this important step!

Networking in the Polar Vortex

Schuler Scholar Airian Williams (WTHS '12, Williams '16) speaks with Mike Demetriou from Baum Realty Group at the SSP Career & Internship Fair.

In January, Schuler Scholars proved that not even a polar vortex could stop them from pursuing professional development opportunities. After mingling during breakfast at the DoubleTree Hotel, we made our way into the Schuler Scholar Program's 2014 Career and Internship Fair. Over 35 organizations greeted us, along with a resume consulting table and a photographer ready to take professional headshots for our LinkedIn profiles. We spent the next two hours networking with representatives from companies ranging from the Chicago Botanic Garden to Jumpstart to the Steppenwolf Theatre Company for a variety of internships. While many of the positions focused on education administration and programming, opportunities were available for those interested in areas such as ecological conservation, finance, engineering and media as well.
