You Are Invited: Admissions Guidance - Provided by Gowan Group

Admissions Guidance

We need to prepare for the upcoming Admissions Season! Gowan Group believes that a fresh, new perspective on honing our admissions skills is the perfect preparation for the upcoming school year and a fitting complement to our Strategic Enrollment Management Planning. We offer a new philosophy on admissions guidance. Real life lessons learned from Corporate America are easily and strategically applied to the admissions process. Our Admissions Guidance program teaches a calculated process to recruiting a larger, more appropriate candidate pool, which results in a more effective school experience and a higher admissions yield. We teach "real life" traditional sales techniques based on Dan Pink's sales theory and Corporate America. Dan Pink discusses the "new art of sales" in his most recent book, To Sell is Human.

Some admissions sales techniques include:

  • Marketing your school's value proposition to your target audience
  • Interviewing with clarity, "Be very clear with what you are offering a family"
  • Asking direct and pertinent questions - knowing your client
  • Active Listening
  • Prospecting
  • Qualifying prospects
  • Proper follow-up process
  • The importance of exit interviews and the right questions to ask
  • Keeping accurate files
  • Networking
  • Referrals (and how to use them to recruit new candidates!)
  • Social Media, inbound marketing, word-of-mouth marketing
  • The elevator speech - consistent message across campus
  • Working the funnel of activity by the numbers

These skills and strategies are rarely introduced to an admissions team and never within this new philosophy. Given that the competitive nature among independent schools has never been so strong, schools need every advantage in order to communicate their value proposition to their target audience. These strategies are the perfect complement when coupled with a robust strategic enrollment management plan. By using specific data collected from your school community, the admissions office will learn to be direct, clear and calculated in their approach to attracting more appropriate candidates. The course takes place on your campus and consists of 2.5 days of intense guidance and then follow-up meetings once a month for 12 months. Goals are set and strategies discussed. Gowan Group will play an active role to ensure your annual admissions numbers are met. Unlimited access to our team at any time is included.

Why Chris Pryor and Gowan Group?

As a life-long educator, strategist and researcher, Chris Pryor is in his third decade of school leadership. He has held leadership positions at Harbor Country Day, The Independence School, Hackley, Rye Country Day, Cardigan Mountain, Rippowam-Cisqua and Tuxedo Park School. A skilled communicator and visionary practitioner, Chris has led his schools through strategic and long-range plans, marketing and image projects, programmatic paradigm shifts, enrollment challenges and community divides. He brings a wealth of practical, theoretical and consultant experience to the table; is a stickler for data and detail and will make an otherwise arduous task seem like a ton of fun. He holds a dual Masters Degree in Educational Administration and Curriculum and Teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University and a Bachelors Degree in Education from Roanoke College.

Over the years Chris has worked closely with trustees, faculty, parents, students, alumni, admissions, and development offices. He is a well-known speaker on topics such as social media, marketing, admissions guidance, crisis management, professional development, and board training. He is a talented storyteller, as he learned early on that sharing the school's story with all its constituents is one way to be as inclusive as possible.

Chris was meticulously trained in the art of sales. Through the guidance of Dan Pink, Bill Grimes, Sandler Sales Institute, and Franklin Covey, Chris has become a sales expert. It was an enlightening experience when Chris realized that the admissions office could learn a lot about traditional sales from Corporate America. His Admissions Guidance courses reflect all he learned in sales and how it relates to admissions. Most recently, Chris was appointed Managing Director of Bob Carter Companies. Based throughout the United States and abroad, BCCo consultants provide exceptional assistance with: capital campaign management & counsel; planning and development; leadership training; volunteer and staff engagement; major/mega gifts; acquisition, retention and upgrade strategies; and ongoing fundraising consultation.
