About PAALS

PAALS is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization committed to enriching and empowering children and adults with physical disabilities and social needs by training service animals and providing animal assisted educational and recreational activities.

Message from the Executive Director

When I started PAALS it was not out of a desire to make money. So how does a leader of a small nonprofit literally fuel her passion?

If you are me, you Pray, you take classes/seminars, learn from mentors and you share your passion. We have a lot of support to foster and a lot more of our community members need to hear about the need.

One of the good and bad parts of running PAALS is we don't have enough staff. The down side of that is obvious I think, but the good side is this: I get to personally see our needs in the faces of veterans of ones like I just met. This is a young veteran with two small children who is now on disability from serving all of us in recent wars. He tugged on my heart strings with his stories that I know only skimmed the surface of the trauma he has endured. He didn't complain or tell me how his lack of support since his return has left him heartbroken, but I'm pretty sure that is what he conveyed to me in a subtle way that broke my heart.

See, I can't fix this for him, but he and I both know a specially trained dog IS his answer as he worked with a military canine partner and lost him as his plane returned him home.

I need all of my PAALS supporters to help me answer this prayer/need/calling. PAALS needs a facility, to house more dogs, to help more veterans, to make a bigger difference for the people who deserve it the most.

There are days that we get tired wondering if we should settle for where we are/what we do now, but we are inundated with calls for help, especially from our local veterans. By joining PAALS Pack you can help me not turn them away.

Please pass this message to other service minded, generous, future PAALS Pack members. You can make a difference, PAALS does make a difference, we will with enough monthly promised support, rise to this occasion!

You can join PAALS Pack by clicking on the PAALS Pack logo below. New Pack members receive a free Members Only t-shirt. All Pack members are sent a monthly PAALS Pack Newsletter highlighting a puppy or dog in training in a Members Only video.

PAALS Website Gets a Face Lift
Check Out the New Content and Blog

PAALS website (www.paals.org) has undergone a major face lift!

We have added real-time (or nearly) so links to the latest PAALS YouTube videos, the most recent PAALS Facebook postings and the current tweets from PAALS Twitter account. You can see all of these at the bottom of the home page. Clicking on any of the items show you the whole video, post or tweet.

Grace, the newest PAALS puppy in training, has started her o wn blog. In it she (with a little help from her friends) will describe growing up training as a PAALS Service Dog. You can see Grace's Blog by clicking on "Blog" in the top menu or in the sidebar of all pages except the front page.

PAALS has also become a member of AmazonSmiles. When you shop Amazon using the link in the sidebar of any page (except the home page), Amazon will contribute 1/2 percent of whatever you spend to PAALS. If you shop regularly on Amazon, please start using PAALS AmazonSmiles link.

And finally, we've added slideshows under the "Photos" menu for these 2013 events: UN-Gala, Poochapalooza and Team Graduation.

Party with PAALS: UN-Gala 2014
Save the Date for Dog-aritaville at 7 PM on March 22 at the SC State Museum

The theme has been set!

The entertainment planned!

Don't miss Columbia's party of the year: Party with PAALS: An UN-Gala 2014.

The 2014 UN-Gala will be at the same location as last year: The South Carolina State Museum. (Yes, we were surprised they wanted us to come back too!) The event will start at 7 PM, so don't be late!

As usual there will be plenty of music, fun & games, silent and live auctions and -- of course -- an open bar with adult beverages.

We have made some major changes this year for event check-in and for auction purchase check-out. We think you will be pleased how much more quickly and smoothly both of these processes will move in 2014.

So start planning your costume now. The possibilities are endless. Just look deep into your closet for your best (i.e. most outlandish beach/Caribbean wear) and put together your outfit. Of  just come as you are. We won't care. And you'll have fun no matter how you are dressed!

Tickets are $60 per person. However, advance purchase tickets are available through March 8th are only $40 per person.

Special pricing is available for PAALS volunteers. Volunteers will receive ticket purchase instructions in a separate email.
