TUESDAY IS ELECTION DAY
TIFT COUNTIANS GO TO POLLS

Tift County's primary election is Tuesday, May 20, and several local elected positions will be decided.

With the retirement of state Sen. John "Dickie" Crosby, R-Tifton, either Tifton lawyer Bryce Johnson or Americus licensed counselor Greg Kirk will become the next senator from District 13 -- which encompasses Tift, Turner, Worth, Lee, Wilcox, Crisp, Dodge and parts of Dooly and Sumter counties. The Republican senatorial candidates have no Democratic opposition.

In a non-partisan race, local attorneys Patty Veazey and Herb Benson are seeking the Tift County state court judge seat being vacated by Larry Mims.

Two Tift County Commission races pits incumbent Sherry Miley and Stan Stalnaker in the District 4 race, and incumbent Mike Jones and Greg Wood in District 6.

The open Tift County Board of Education District 5 seat has three candidates vying the position: Keith Barr, Mark Bennett and Richard Golden.

Early voting ends Friday, May 16. Polls are open Tuesday from 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

'PUT ON PURPLE' TODAY FOR LUPUS AWARENESS

Tift and surrounding counties are rallying today (May 16) to "Put on Purple" to raise awareness of lupus, a mysterious and devastating disease that ravages different parts of the body.

On May 16, thousands of people around the country will "Put on Purple." During May and June, local supporters of lupus awareness are encouraging folks to  wear purple every Friday with jeans.

"We need everyone's support to fight lupus and find a cure," says Pat McKinnon, a local volunteer. "Lupus is more widespread than most people realize. In fact, research shows most Americans know little or nothing about lupus and its overwhelming impact. We can change that, but we need your support."
