Sumatra
Classic Mandheling

Sumatra is a popular coffee, hailing from the Indonesian island of that name.   Mandheling refers to the people of that region. Sumatra can be a polarizing coffee among coffee buyers because there are many variations in the flavor profile, due to variability in the way the coffee is processed. We find that to be one of the joys of this origin.

The classic Mandheling cup profile is low acid, big body and earthy flavors.

Halloween Blend
LAST WEEK!

Not last week's coffee, but the LAST WEEK we'll be offering it this season. Halloween Blend is the darkest coffee we offer all year, and this year's seasonal coffee leverages an unusual Mexican coffee that makes it really great. Think "dia de los muertos" of coffee.

Big body, dark, smokey flavors.

Happy Thursday!

Last week was a great week for partner events. We celebrated two firsts with our wonderful partners: the grand opening of Haw River Farmhouse Ales, and the inaugural Chicken Wire dinner conceived and organized by Dawn and Regan Stachler of Little Hen Restaurant.

Haw River is the latest in the explosion of craft breweries in North Carolina. Their wheelhouse is Belgium-style beers, especially fermented and sours. We were thrilled when they contacted us to supply coffee for their St. Benedict's Breakfast Dubbel (pronounced "double"). There are actually two coffees in that beer, and they are incorporated into the process in a novel way. One of our specials this week is on the Sumatra coffee used in that beer. In what is now a sea of coffee porters and stouts, this dubbed stands out as one of the best coffee beers in the field. If you are interested in a short history of coffee beers, read Jim's blog post on the topic HERE.

The other noteworthy event this week was the first Chicken Wire dinner. Inspired by the Blind Pig event in Asheville, Chef Regan Stachler wanted to create a Triangle dinner club where like-minded chefs conspire to cook what they WANT to cook, instead of needing to make a menu that appeals to the masses. The event is held in a secret location, and the diners only know the theme of the dinner, not the actual menu. The inaugural event's theme was a halloween-appropriate "A Very Offal Dinner". It takes an intrepid diner to spend $100 per ticket for dinner in an unknown place, whose theme is offal, but chefs Stachler, Sean Fowler (Mandolin) and John Childers (Heron's) made it all worthwhile. I have to admit, I found it challenging to pair a coffee with a dessert course that included chicken's feet and pig's blood.I encourage all of you to get out to Little Hen, and consider attending the next Chick Wire dinner!

Enjoy your weekend!
