Seriously folks, location matters when it comes to classical music.

...and thanks to those of you who have donated to our matching gift campaign, the symphony is even stronger in our favorite location: Fairfax, VA.

Here are 9 more places where classical music has thrived, past to present.

  1. Western music in the middle ages was performed in stone-walled gothic cathedrals, monasteries and cloisters. It was composed for that space, and it sounded great there (lots of reverb).
  2. Bach performed in a church that was much smaller than a cathedral.  The pipe organ sounded brilliant in that room (but would have reverberated wildly in a large cathedral).
  3. Mozart performed in rooms of his patrons' palaces for elaborately dressed people.  It was grand with a kind of beautiful intimacy that allowed the music to be heard in all of its detail.
  4. Only later would Mahler and later composers fill out large and ever-growing symphony halls with music that could reach the very last row.
  5. Now it's played during movies.
  6. It's played in schools.
  7. It's played in parks.
  8. (and even parking garages).
  9. Your home!  Email me if you're interested, seriously. :)

How much does the future of live classical music in Fairfax matter to you or your family?

On your donation form, there's a place where we want you to tell us where YOU love to hear classical music performed (or where you want to hear it performed and wonder why it isn't).  Will you do that for us?

Your messages WILL BE reviewed by Maestro Zimmerman! (so don't say, "on the moon" because Maestro is sensitive...).

We look forward to hearing from you.
