New This Year: The college appreciates everything its employees do to help make HCC successful. As a thank you, the college will close at 4:30 p.m. on the Thursday before Winter Break so that all staff and faculty can attend the holiday party.
Food and drinks will be provided including a cash bar for alcoholic beverages. Catering by Black-Eyed Susan.

HCC breaks ground on Student Center expansion project
HCC broke ground on its Student Center expansion on Friday, Sept. 12, 2014. The $15 million dollar project will add an additional 29,229 sq.ft. to the existing 19,000 sq.-ft. Student Center and will feature enhanced student lounge areas, study spaces, and meeting rooms for campus clubs. An additional 10,000 sq.-ft. outdoor patio and recreation area will also be included as part of the renovation, bringing the total square footage of the indoor and outdoor areas to more than 59,000 sq.ft. Senator Mikulski visits campus to announce cyber grant and Johns Hopkins partnership
During a recent visit to HCC on Sept. 24, U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) announced a $713,996 federal grant has been awarded to HCC to prepare students for cybersecurity jobs. These federal dollars from the National Science Foundation (NSF) will enhance the college's cybersecurity curriculum and provide its students with more opportunities for hands-on research through a partnership with Johns Hopkins University Information Security Institute. HCC remembers Dr. Norman P. Shea
Dr. Norman P. Shea, HCC's second president, passed away after a long illness on Sept. 23, 2014. Shea served as president of HCC from 1986 to 2002, taking over leadership of the college after the retirement of HCC's first president, Dr. Atlee C. Kepler. During Shea's time at HCC, the college budget tripled and the Endowment Fund, which provides money for student scholarships, grew from $300,000 to $4.5 million. The expansion of campus and the need to prepare the college for the growth in technology were key initiatives during Shea's tenure.

HCC prepares for Middle States visit
 Dr. Peter Mora, president, Atlantic Cape Community College and the Middle States team chair, visited the HCC campus for a preliminary visit on Oct. 13-14, 2014. While at HCC, Mora toured the campus, met with staff and faculty to discuss the Middle States process, and sat in a Unit Planning meeting. Dr. Mora will return with the Middle States team in April 2015. [ Read More] |

"Bodices and Goddesses" Exhibit now on display at Kepler
The Bodices for Goddesses project, on display through Oct. 30, was conceived by artist Cynthia Fraula-Hahn. Fraula-Hahn used plaster-embedded gauze to wrap the torsos of local women, several of whom have had mastectomies. These plaster works were then enhanced with paintings and other artistic elements.

STEMM Middle College continues to grow
HCC launched its STEMM Technical Middle College (STMC) in fall 2013.The unique design of the STMC earned it numerous grant awards as well as special recognition from the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) for the 2014 Outstanding Career and Technology Education Program Postsecondary Award of Excellence and the 2014 Outstanding Instructional Program Award from the Community Colleges of Appalachia (CCA). Second Police Academy class graduates
In June 2014, HCC graduated its second class of Police Academy recruits. The HCC Police Academy is an entry-level police training academy designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary to function effectively in all areas of law enforcement. [Read More]

Upward Bound: Preparing high school students for future success
 Upward Bound provided services to a total of 70 students from Hancock, North, South, and Williamsport high schools for the 2013-2014 project year. Through various services offered by the program, students were provided an opportunity to get a head start on college planning and preparation beginning as early as ninth grade. [ Read More] |

2014 outstanding faculty named
HCC recently recognized seven of its outstanding faculty members for the 2013-2014 academic year. In addition, physics professor Paul Jozik was named outstanding faculty member of the year. Jozik has taught at HCC since 1982. [Read More]

Keller celebrates 60th birthday with special photography exhibit
Benita Keller, a local photographer and adjunct instructor at HCC, recently exhibited artwork at the Bridge Gallery in Shepherdstown, W.Va. Keller's solo exhibition, "30/60" celebrated 30 years of fine art and photojournalistic
photography and coincided with her sixtieth birthday. [Read More]

Miller writes children's book to celebrate new sculpture in City Park
Amanda Miller, associate professor of English at HCC, recently collaborated with artist Paul Rhymer to create a new children's book, "The Fishing Lesson," to celebrate the installment of a brand new sculpture of the same name at Hagerstown City Park. The sculpture, featuring a bear teaching its cub how to fish, was dedicated on Saturday, Sept. 20, as part of the opening ceremonies of the city's fall fest. [Read More]

Kempler holds first art show in Kepler
Adjunct faculty member Erica Kempler held her first campus art show in September 2014. The exhibit, "Changes in Nature," featured clay and mixed media installations. Kempler is a ceramics artist who works with porcelain and uses a variety of firing techniques to create installations that address topics such as modern throwaway culture or the beauty of nature in everyday life. STEM Fair returns to HCC in April 2015
HCC is partnering with Washington County Public Schools to offer a STEM Fair
in April 2015. HCC held its first STEM Fair in April 2012 to coincide with the opening of the new STEM Building and the Kepler Theater expansion. The 2014 STEM Fair will once again feature exhibits and activities for children in K-12. In addition, this year's fair will feature academic team challenges conducted by WCPS students and a recycled materials art show. Admission is free and the STEM Fair is open to the public. HCC Brand Management Guide and 2014 Faces Pictorial Staff Directory now available
 The Public Information & Government Relations (PIGR) Office recently released an HCC Brand Management & Writing Style Guide. This guide provides detailed information about the services offered by PIGR (including how to request promotional materials, photos/videos, website edits, social media accounts, etc.), as well as the rules and guidelines for brand management (e.g., approved logos, fonts, and colors), and a writing style guide for print and online documents and publications. Hard copies can be obtained in the PIGR Office. The guide can be also be downloaded from the HCC website at www.hagerstowncc.edu/faculty-staff/pigr
Also available: The 2014 Faces Pictorial Staff Directory, or Faces Book. The Faces Book contains photos of all full-time staff and faculty and regular, part-time faculty and is released every summer.
