CCTS Biostatistics Clinic
11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Pittman Center for Advanced Medical Studies (PCAMS),
1924 7th Avenue South
Need statistical help for your research? On the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month, the CCTS offers a walk-in clinic where a team of biostatisticians is available to assist with study design and methods. These drop-in clinics are designed for investigators needing assistance with:
- Study Design
- Sample Size and Power Calculations
- Data Analysis
- Display of Data and Results
- Interpretation of Results
- Statistical Software
Open to all faculty members, post-docs, fellows, residents, and students. Assistance will be provided by members of the CCTS BERD group.
Investigators with specific questions to be addressed at the clinic are also welcome to send their questions, draft manuscripts, draft project proposals, and de-identified datasets in advance to Dr. Bob Oster with a copy to Dr. Jerry McGwin. For more information click here.

Workshop: Design of Pilot Studies
9-11 a.m.
Ryals Public Health Building, Room107
This seminar will focus on the how to write specific aims and to propose analyses that are appropriate for pilot studies. It will emphasize that pilot studies are primarily focused upon feasibility of proposed research (can it be done?), ability to recruit (can you get the subjects?), and ability to collect data (can you measure your outcome?). The seminar will also focus on how well-conducted pilot studies can springboard to larger research applications. Designed for new investigators (doctoral students. post doctoral fellows, and junior faculty) who are preparing to pilot study applications.
Brought to you by the NIAMS Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Center & the Center for Clinical and Translational Science Questions? Contact David Redden, PhD (dredden@uab.edu) or Jennifer Croker, PhD (jcroker@uab.edu). Flyer attached here.

Call for Submissions: AAMC Collaboration with Khan Academy, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
The Association of American Medical Colleges, Khan Academy, and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) announced a collaboration to provide free, online resources to help students prepare for the revised Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) that will be administered in 2015.
To develop the new resources, the three organizations are sponsoring a competition to encourage medical students, graduate students, residents and faculty to create educational tutorials about concepts that will be tested by the new MCAT exam.
Contest submissions are now being accepted! Online video submissions will be accepted through June 14, 2013. To view the press release; to view full contest rules, submission guidelines, and criteria for entry.
Take Advantage of CCTS Panels
Capture your grant reviewer's imagination
Consult with your peers to optimize content
Take your proposal from good to great
Stand apart from the rest
We invite you to visit our website to learn more about the variety of Nascent Project Panels (NPPs) and Panels Done Quickly (PDQs), which are designed to help investigators strengthen both their science and their applications. The Panels complement each other, with the NPP providing feedback on a broad range of issues for application development and the PDQs providing more targeted assistance on a range of activities (e.g., project development, implementation, interpretation and/or dissemination).
The next Nascent Project Panel takes place Wednesday, May 22 at 4 p.m. in PCAMS.

NIH Funding Opportunities:
From the Department of Health and Human Services:
Undiagnosed Diseases Gene Function Research (R21)
RFA-RM-13-003
Funding Opportunity RFA-RM-13-003 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. This Developmental Research Funding Opportunity intends to support gene function studies in collaboration with the Undiagnosed Diseases Network (UDN) building upon the NIH Intramural Research Programs Undiagnosed Diseases Program (NIH-UDP). Responsive applications will propose to investigate the underlying genetics, biochemistry and/or pathophysiology of newly diagnosed diseases in association with the respective gene variant(s) identified through the UDN. In recent years, gene function studies combined with genetic and genomic analyses and metabolic studies have greatly improved diagnoses of these very rare diseases and advanced scientific knowledge of the underlying pathogenesis. This initiative is funded through the NIH Common Fund, which supports cross-cutting programs that are expected to have exceptionally high impact.
