FEATURED SCHOOL: Witch Hazel Elementary
Fitness Can Be Fun as Kids Fuel Up to Play!
Last Thursday, led by PE teacher Debbie Jaron and kitchen manager Monica Fults, students in grades 4-6 at Witch Hazel "fueled up" with milk mustaches, got their groove on with Wii Dance, sharpened skills with fast-paced Ping Pong, and signed pledges committing to at least 60 minutes of fitness every day. Big kids from the Hilhi football and volleyball teams helped add to the fun.

This was all thanks to a $3,240 grant from Fuel Up to Play 60, a joint effort of the National and Oregon Dairy Councils, the National Football League, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to promote nutrition and fitness. The grant paid for Wii systems, playground supplies, nutrition education materials, and more. Also look for Mrs. Fults' new murals in the gym - coming soon!

2014-15 SCHOOL CALENDAR UPDATE
Board approves changes to restore a full school-year calendar
On September 23, the HSD Board approved using increased Gain Share revenue from Washington County and the City of Hillsboro to restore the District to a full calendar year for 2014-15. As a result, November 26 is changed from a budget reduction day to a licensed non-contract day (no school), and the last day of school has been changed to June 12. Click here for the full press release. Click here for the revised calendar.
SUPERINTENDENT'S VIDEO
Superintendent Mike Scott extends his invitation to the community to his upcoming coffee chats. Joining Mr. Scott is Assistant Superintendent Steve Larson, who explains HSD's current statewide assessment results and the new Smarter Balanced Assessment that will be used this year. Mr. Larson also previews the student achievement report, comprising eight groups of achievement indicators, that will be published in February 2015. Click here to view the video.
THOUGHTEXCHANGE PROCESS TO BEGIN OCTOBER 6
Tell us your thoughts about our schools

Hillsboro School District has partnered with a company named Thoughtexchange to open a broad community dialogue about our schools-what's working well, what could be improved, what else would you like to share? Later this week, staff, parents and community patrons will receive an e-mail from Superintendent Mike Scott asking them to expect an invitation e-mail for the process on Monday the 6th either from him or from their principal. We're looking forward to the feedback!

EARN FUNDS FOR YOUR SCHOOL BY JOINING THE FIRE UP YOUR FEET CHALLENGE
Track activities in October, including International Walk to School Day on October 8

Join the Fire Up Your Feet Challenge by tracking your physical activities from October 1-31, including walking to school on Wednesday, October 8. The challenge is part of a program to encourage families, students and schools to participate in lifestyles which inspire our children to be healthy and physically active, while raising funds for schools. Click here for the fall 2014 challenge flyer. Click here to see who's signed up for the challenge and join in! Butternut Creek Elementary earned $1,400 in the May 2014 challenge!

FUEL YOUR SCHOOL
Help fund teacher projects each time you fill up in October

Throughout the month of October, for every 8 gallons of gas purchased at Chevron and Texaco stations, $1 (up to $350,000) will be donated to Chevron's Fuel Your School (FYS) program. FYS will then fund projects that teachers in Washington and Multnomah Counties have submitted to donorschoose.org on a rotating basis until they've exhausted the funds. See a list of current teacher requests here and learn more about the FYS program here.

BLEACHER PROJECTS COMPLETED AT HARE FIELD AND GLENCOE
Two of the larger projects for the District's Facilities department last summer were the replacement of "home" bleachers at Hare Field and the retrofit of bleachers at Glencoe High School. The projects were completed just in time for the fall sports season. Click here to read more.
