Bioengineer's New NIH Grant Will Develop Esophageal Cancer Stent
Bioengineer Yunqing (Kevin) Kang, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering, has received a $141,743 grant from the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health to develop a novel biodegradable polymer stent for esophageal cancer. The stent will be designed to prevent complications
such as bleeding that result from
surgically implanted metal mesh stents, today's
gold standard for treating inoperable patients with this type of cancer.

Pediatric Surgeon Researcher Appointed Interim Dean of the College of Medicine
The Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine announced last week the appointment of Arthur J. Ross, M.D., M.B.A., as interim dean. He succeeds David J. Bjorkman, M.D., M.S.P.H., who announced that he would step down as dean and executive director of medical affairs effective Jan. 1. As interim dean, Ross will determine how to best position the college for its next phase of growth.
Ross recently retired as dean at West Virginia University School of Medicine. He is a past chair of the Governing Council for the American Medical Association Section on Medical Schools, and is the immediate past chair of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.

Virtual Fence System Protecting Human and Wildlife, Subject of Seminar on Boca Campus This Thursday
After building a virtual fence system, a computer scientist
and his team deployed it for human and wildlife protection in a tiger reserve in India and at a rhinoceros park in South Africa.
The system makes it possible to detect poachers, tigers and rhinos, with classification based on micropower radar and
millimeter-
scale computers. These tiny devices are part of a battery-powered wireless mesh network that reaches ranger base stations.

eRA Commons Status Screen for Principal Investigators Now Mobile Friendly
The NIH updated their eRA system on January 15 to include mobile access to the eRA Commons Status Screen for PIs. This new feature will give investigators the convenience of tracking and managing grant applications on a wide range of devices such as smartphones and tablets. PIs can view the new mobile-friendly website by going to the eRA Commons mobile login page
