Why Trails are Important for Sustainability: Trails for the People, Trails for the Planet!

 

From the outside looking in, it may be hard to imagine how trails contribute to our sustainability. They're just made for fun, right? They're just for someone to get from one place to another! They're for me to take my dog for a walk! They're just for kids wanting to express their teenage angst on those gosh darn mountain bikes! They're a scar on the landscape where there should be NO people! They're for horses to leave their dung in the middle of! Trails and sustainability? Pshaw! 

 

Campus Conservation Nationals: 2015 Review 

 

Campus Conservation Nationals was an opportunity to educate and raise awareness for energy and water conservation in Residence Life. Residential students have the largest impact on UCCS' carbon footprint since they live on campus. This presents a target group of people that have the opportunity of making an impact in reduction based on behavior change.

WinterGreen: LEED-ing The Way In Sustainability

 

High efficiency buildings were the first stepping stone in creating a more sustainable culture at UCCS. U.S. Green Building Council Southern Colorado Branch hosted their annual WinterGreen event to help celebrate and highlight the achievements made at UCCS in respect to LEED certification. As of March 2015, UCCS is home to six LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Gold certified buildings, two buildings currently pending LEED certification, and four buildings in progress that aim towards LEED Gold certification.    

 

UCCS Rides Free: The Mountain Metro Measure 

 

If you were able to ride Mountain Metro for free, where would you go and how would you utilize the service? UCCS Office of Parking and Transportation Services wanted to find out. From February 23rd through March 1st, all UCCS students, faculty and staff with a university I.D. were able to ride Mountain Metropolitan buses free of charge.

Green Action Fund Update

The Green Action Fund (GAF) was created to reduce the ecological footprint of UCCS and promote sustainable environmental, social and economic values through a variety of student-sponsored projects. The GAF Committee is comprised of only students with one faculty and staff advisor. The committee reviews, rates and approves projects with the intent of creating a more sustainable campus culture. 

  • Student Summit, April 9th @ 5:30 p.m. Event will feature speaker Winona LaDuke. There will be food, drink, and a poetry craft.
  • G.A.F. celebration party, May 1st 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. @ the Sustainability house. There will be food, music, and lots of great people to hang out with!
  • Project proposal deadline for submission is April 25th for the Spring semester.

Students for Environmental Awareness and Sustainability Update

S.E.A.S. was founded in 2003 by a group of impassioned students, including our very own Linda Kogan, that wanted to bring sustainability to UCCS. S.E.A.S. is a student-run group that aims to educate the campus about conservation and sustainability practices.

  • Meetings: Every other Wednesday 8:30 a.m. @ University Center
  • Take Back the Tap! Relaunch - Encourages campus members to use reusable bottles to diminish plastic waste.
  • Student Garden - Located in the Heller Center, the Student Garden is aimed towards forming a permaculture with sustainable design, promoting the importance of mindfulness when it comes to the environment.
