TUESDAY, APRIL 7th ... RB-CRA Neighborhood Meeting: Singer Island

Tony Brown, CRA Director, and Dawn Pardo, Council Chair, sponsored a Town Hall Meeting which was held in the new Clean and Safe Headquarters on Blue Heron Blvd to begin discussion on expansion of the CRA boundaries on Singer Island. This is also the site of the long awaited Singer Island Police sub-station.

The meeting opened with Dawn and Major Rozier, RBPD, sharing information regarding the 23 auto break-ins in five non-gated condo parking areas early that Tuesday morning. Collected DNA and surveillance/license plate reader cameras evidence will help with the investigation. Major Rozier encouraged residents to keep cars locked and do NOT leave valuables in your vehicle. If you SEE something ... SAY something.  Please call 911.

Treasure Coast Planning facilitated the discussion.  More meetings will be held and we encourage resident participation as there are critical issues being considered. Interactive automated voting took place and about 45 resident participants could get a quick overview of the feeling of the group as various questions were posed. Summary:

  • Boundary expansion should not include the single family homes on Island and Beach Roads.
  • The majority felt the height restrictions should be between 5 and 9 stories for new commercial construction i.e. parking garage...hotel...or Intracoastal condos.
  • Most felt safe on the Island.
  • Code enforcement is a concern.

Currently, constructions is underway for a surface parking lot with 60 spaces.

The meeting was an initial neighborhood discussion.  Please watch for more meetings to be announced. Attend and hear firsthand what is happening ... and share your issues and/or concerns, and satisfaction with what is happening or with future planning.

NOTE: Several residents contacted the Voice very concerned and disappointed with the short meeting notice and were unable to attend.  Hopefully we will have a bit more notice for future meetings. For meeting info - Click Here -

From Yvonne:

Re: April 7th CRA Singer Island Community Meeting:

Thanks. I did see the outline, but was hoping for more info on the Coast Construction Line. Stay well, and thanks for the great job you do.

Reply: Coastal Construction Control Line ordinance - From Riviera Beach Staff ...

code amendment is scheduled to go to the City Council on first reading on April 15, 2015.  Second reading of this item and the CCCL item will be on the same Council meeting agenda to provide for approval at the same time; likely on May 6, 2015.

From Barbara:

The past week there have been numerous cars broken into on Singer Island.  It is an island and I don't understand how thieves get on and off without being caught!  Most incidents happen during the early morning hours.  Why not post a police car/policeman at each end of the island for surveillance.  Seems like it would deter these petty thieves.

From Debra:

Just this morning there were several break ins of cars last night!  Our building does not have a guard.  We are in paradise and shouldn't be afraid of being robbed.  We need RB police to step up patrols on our island! We are taxpayers and deserve their presence!

Reply: Yes, the SICA Safety and Security Committee agrees; surveillance cameras and police presence "deter" crimes, but does NOT stop crimes ... Comments from Mike Blasdell - The Riviera Beach Police Department Team (as well as Palm Beach Shores PD) have a very good conviction rate.  They almost always catch their target(s).  We can speed that process by helping them in any way we can as partners ...and also look out for each other around the entire Island to be sure this stops now.  Lock the doors, keep an eye on the news, look out for your neighbors and please report anything suspicious or that doesn't seem right/normal  ...using our 911 system.
