TUESDAY, MARCH 31st ... SICA MONTHLY MEETING:

SICA's final meeting for the 2014-2015 season was held this past week with an enlightening talk by John Carey, Inspector General. Mr. Carey explained how the office works and the role the general public can play. He also addressed the recent report on Riviera Beach and the issues and how they were addressed. Ruth Jones, City Manager, commented on the report following Mr.Carey's remarks and they both talked about measures in place to remedy items in the IG report that needed to be addressed.

Officer Cheeseman gave an update on recent car theft in Palm Beach Isles. In both cases cars were unlocked and keys available. He reminded everyone to be vigilant in locking their cars and not leaving property visible (laptops, phones, purses, packages) to invite attempted theft. Using common sense he said is the best prevention.

Mayor John Workman, SICA Director and Mayor of Palm Beach Shores, gave an update on issues and projects planned for Palm Beach Shores. The town is preparing to address the burying of utility lines. This would be a multi-year project and they feel the time is right to do it from a practical and economically feasible point of view. Workshops will be held and the citizens will be voting on the action. Another major issue being addressed is the short-term leasing of individual homes and the issues this brings to neighborhoods. The leasing for "vacation rental" has been problematic and the town is enacting controls in that regard.

President, Ann Rettie, invited SICA members to the upcoming April 24th End of Season Social at The Marriott Resort.

We have noticed signs posted on the beach next to the Marriott time share building across from Sugar Sands stating the public can no longer use the beach in front of that building. How can the town post a public beach access only to have the Marriott say we can no longer use the beach.

From Marcy:

My neighbor was harassed at the beach the other day. He was told he had to leave ... this is a private beach.

Reply: The City spoke to the manager of the Oceana Palm's Marriott and told him they must remove the signs and verified that indeed the sign has now been removed. What are large commercial vessels doing going up and down slowly just off shore of singer island?

Reply: They are ships/barges extracting sand offshore and taking it out to the pumping area for deposit on the beaches of Palm Beach County.
