It was on the 20th of January, 1942 that the Wansee Conference was convened in the suburbs of Berlin, where 15 senior Nazi bureaucrats met to coordinate the "Final Solution" (Endlösung) in which the Nazis would attempt to exterminate the entire Jewish population of Europe. I had turned 7 just one month prior to the conference, and our family was already in the midst of great upheaval and turmoil.
The infamous Reinhard Heydrich, Himmler's second in command of the SS, convened the conference, deciding on how to rid Europe of its Jewish population. In his words, "Europe would be combed of Jews from east to west."
Each year, the Young Israel of Deerfield Beach, Florida, holds a remembrance event commemorating this notorious conference as a reminder of the shocking and ugly thought processes of evil doers.
This event is held to remind us all of the 6 million Jewish men, woman and children murdered by the Nazis and their followers -
and to understand and realize that genocide sadly and regrettably continues to take place in our world of today.
This year, the Wansee Conference Remembrance Event will be held Sunday evening, January 24, at 8:00 pm.
I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to share my family's experience during those dark days of the Shoah/Holocaust.
Hugs,
Marion
