Explore Outdoors!

Chances are, you are spending a lot of time outside with your children during the summer months of care.  Outside time should be an extension of the classroom learning as it is critical to a child's educational experience.  The outdoors provides valuable learning and encourages children to think more deeply about their play.  Children are natural explorers of their surroundings!  They use all of their senses to explore. Children look and listen to observe what is happening around them, touch what they can reach, smell the fresh scents of nature, and even taste when they can.  Children run, jump, dig and climb as they discover new places.  Everything is new, interesting and exciting!

Due to television, video games, handheld devices and formally structured activities, children are not playing outside as much as previous generations.  The unstructured play that comes from playing outdoors stimulates and strengthens a child's physical, cognitive, social and emotional development.

Some of the benefits of going outside and experiencing nature include:

*reduction in behavioral disorders, anxiety and depression in children, as well as reduction in symptoms of ADHD

*reduction in illnesses

*stimulate creativity and wonder

*learn about nature

*clean air

*stimulate the senses

*increase problem solving abilities

*make more friends!

Some staff from the Saginaw ISD Head Start and Early Head Start program attended the Chippewa Nature Center Preschool training recently and brought back many great ideas to implement in their outdoor learning environment.  The picture below is one element they added to their Brucker site.  The Infant Staff collected old pots and pans that are not used anymore and attached them to their fence.  Add some sticks or wooden spoons and listen for musical fun!

There is a lot of research out there to support the benefits of outdoor play on young children.  The following two article links are from www.naeyc.org.

Are You Ready to Play Outside? by Mo Willems

Gerald the elephant and his friend Piggie are outdoors and ready to play when a drop of rain falls "PLINK!" on Piggie's head. Watching her high-spirited mood dive precipitously through annoyance toward despair, Gerald extends an ear to shelter her. Soon, though, two ecstatic worms cavorting in the rain inspire them to find happiness in wet-weather play.
