Every Kid Needs a Champion

As the new school year begins take time to reflect on why you became a teacher.  Some of us were inspired to teach because we had a teacher that understood, challenged, and motivated us to be the best student we could be.

I encourage you to take a few minutes and be inspired by legendary teacher and educator Rita Pierson. Click on the link below to watch Rita's Ted Talk clip.

 The PQA...

The PQA, Program Quality Assessment is the assessment tool identified by the Great Start to Quality program to be used when assessing a program/provider.  The standards listed in the PQA have identified high quality program practices for all children.

Infant Toddler PQA:
II.  Schedules and Routines
II-B.  Arrivals and departures focus on the comfort of children and parents.
Level 5 Indicator:  Children's arrivals and departures are leisurely (e.g., parents establish a morning ritual with child, such as playing with child before departing or reading a story then saying good-bye; caregivers engage children with materials; children freely explore and play).

Preschool PQA:
III.  Adult-Child Interaction
III-B.  Children's separation from home and daily entry to the program are handled with sensitivity and respect.
Level 5 Indicator:  Adults help children separate from their parents/guardians (e.g., children are encouraged to stand at the window, say or wave goodbye, carry family pictures or objects from home).

Family Child Care PQA:
III.  Provider-Child Interaction
III-A.  Providers are warm and supportive with families and children during arrivals and departures.
Level 5 Indicator:  Providers greet and say goodbye to all children and parents/guardians.

Daily Schedule and Caregiving Routines: 90 Minute DVD

Eating, napping, playing, exploring objects and people - all infants and toddlers do these things but have varying personal routines from day to day. When caregivers provide consistent but flexible daily schedules and caregiving support, they let children know their needs are met, freeing the children to investigate their world.
