It's time to renew your AIA membership! The renewal deadline is January 15, 2016. AIA Kentucky members should by now have received a hard copy invoice as well as an email notification from the AIA national membership team, with links to view the renewal invoice and make an online payment, if desired. If you have not received your invoice, contact Kelly Ives.
Extended Payment Plan: AIA continues to offer an installment payment plan in 2016 to help those who need additional time to pay dues in full. Click here for information.
Note to Firm Principals: Please be sure to complete the firm supplemental dues section of the invoice (either on paper or online) and add the correct amount to your individual dues. AIA Kentucky bylaws require that one architect principal per firm (including sole practitioners) must pay $70 per architect, intern architect or technical employee in the firm, up to a maximum of $1,200. The firm supplemental dues support our advocacy efforts on behalf of firms and triggers the firm's inclusion in the AIA Architect Finder online searchable database as well as the Firm Profile listing in the AIA Kentucky Directory.

2016 General Assembly Underway
|
|
|
The 2016 General Assembly began on January 5 and is scheduled to conclude on April 12, 2016. This will be the long session and the major order of business will be the passage of the biennial budget. While revenues are up and the state is expected to carry a surplus into the next fiscal year, Kentucky's underfunded employee pensions and additional Medicaid costs will consume this surplus and then some. Look for the new Governor's budget that will be unveiled on January 26 to be an austere budget reflecting these realities.
One other item that will influence the session is the fight for control of the Kentucky House. The partisan split is currently 50-46 with the Democrats maintaining the majority. There are four vacant seats that will be filled by a special election on March 8. If the Republicans pick up all four seats, the split becomes 50-50 at the most critical point in the session. This will have a major impact on the budget negotiations and all the other major issues that typically get resolved at the end of the session.
AIA Kentucky is expecting a busy session. Public Private Partnership (P3) legislation will be filed again and we will be actively involved in the debate. We are expecting legislation from the Board of Architects that will amend our licensing law and we will support the local option sales tax legislation or LIFT. There will also likely be several other issues that surface as the session progresses. Calendars and schedules for the 2016 legislative session can be viewed online.

Task Force to Review 2015 IBC/IRC; Single Family Inspection Report Issued
AIA Kentucky's representative to the Board of Housing Buildings & Construction, Kevin Locke, AIA reports that the Board has agreed to continue with the vetting/adoption process for the 2015 IBC / IRC (2016 KBC / KRC). A joint task force will be formed to look at the various updates and existing amendments in more detail. AIA Kentucky will have a representative on the Task Force. The Board created a task force in 2015 to review single family inspections statewide. A report has been issued that discusses the potential costs as well as the process by which counties that do not currently inspect single family dwellings could begin to do so. (View Report.)

Architect Positions Open on KY Board of Architects and State Plumbing Code Committee
The Governor's office is seeking nominations from AIA Kentucky for seats on the Kentucky Board of Architects and the State Plumbing Code Committee. Current appointees Jack Ballard, AIA (BOA) and Tom Lett, AIA (Plumbing) will expire in February. While both are eligible for reappointment, the Governor's office has asked AIA Kentucky to submit three names for consideration by the Governor in making these appointments. Anyone interested in either of these opportunities to serve the Commonwealth, please contact Janet Pike by January 20, 2016.

Wallis Miller, Charles Parker Graves Endowed Associate Professor in Architecture, has been nominated and selected for the Great Teacher Award for 2016. This student nominated award is the oldest, continuously presented award to recognize teaching at UK. A committee comprised of members of the UK Alumni Association Board of Directors reviews many nominations submitted by students and takes great pride in awarding 6 Great Teachers annually with this distinction. Recipients are also recognized at a dinner, recognized on the floor of Rupp Arena prior to a UK Basketball game and receive a $3,000 stipend.

On June 29, 2016, the Intern Development Program's (IDP) current 17 experience areas will be realigned into six broad practice-based areas. In order to make this a smooth transition for those already enrolled, NCARB has released the IDP Experience Calculator. This tool can help you to determine how your hours will transition into the six new experience areas and, in conjunction with the experience area map, the calculator can also help you to plan how you will earn hours going forward.

We begin the New Year with fantastic new leadership (see the opening article and list of 2016 officers above), a newly-adopted 5-year strategic plan, and a "Statewide Member Service Plan" that establishes how the state and local chapters are collaborating to ensure every AIA Kentucky member is provided with AIA Core Member Services. We've also created a Memorandum of Understanding between AIA Kentucky and the local chapters that extends to the chapters some specific additional staff services from AIA Kentucky.
This allows us to enhance the role of our Member Outreach Coordinator
Kelly Ives, AIA who, by the way, is now the primary author of your monthly E-News. I hope you'll agree she's doing a great job and I encourage you to continue to provide your firm news and professional milestones to her for inclusion in future issues. Kelly's also managing our Facebook and Twitter feeds and keeping our web site up to date. We hope you'll follow us on these platforms if you're not already doing so!
