Though Russia continues to issue denials, Russian troops, tanks, and arms have all been spotted on Ukraine's territory in the east. NATO's Secretary-General this morning forthrightly stated that Russian forces are engaged in direct military operations inside Ukraine, in a blatant violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

What are Russia's aims? Certainly, it is seeking to bolster the pro-separatist movement in Eastern Ukraine, which has lost territory to Ukrainian forces. Some commentators have also speculated that President Putin is seeking to establish a land corridor from Russia to Crimea, to solidify Russian control over the province.

Whatever Russia's goals might be, these are frightening times for Ukraine's Jews, and all Ukrainian citizens. While most Jews have fled the cities under siege, those who are infirm and elderly remain.

In this week's update, in addition to Ukraine news, and political  and economic analysis, we include several important stories about how Jewish groups in Ukraine are working to aid their communities in the face of conflict.

We also include two stories about more positive events. In Siberia last week, fifty new b'nai mitzvot joined the Jewish community, and from Western Ukraine and Latvia, we have testimonials from Jewish summer campers about how meaningful camp is to them.
