Happy New Year To All of You For 2016!
A message from CHIA President Deborah Collier, RHIA:

I hope the New Year is off to a great beginning for everyone. The New Year usually motivates reflections on the past year and defining goals or resolutions for the New Year. It is good to look back while planning to move ahead and think about what this year may reveal. The CHIA Board of Directors accomplished several milestones last year including a smooth selection process and transition to new CHIA CEO/Executive Director, Sharon Lewis, MBA, RHIA, CHPS, FAHIMA, CPHQ. The Board ended last year with great progress in fine tuning our strategic goals and operational plans. The Board will continue with the next phases of this process this year. The next Board meeting is January 30, 2016. As always, we welcome your suggestions and questions. Likewise, you can also network with and inform your local leaders about any questions you have or suggestions for them to share on your behalf during the CLA Leadership Forum scheduled for January 28th. Be sure to stay connected and informed for updates by checking the CHIA website and the weekly CHIA Bulletin.

On behalf of the CHIA Board of Directors and Executive Office Staff, I am confident we will have an exciting year as we anticipate and prepare for great plans to meet the needs of our members and drive professional growth. I encourage everyone to think of what or how they would like to contribute toward the CHIA Board's efforts to continue the momentum in 2016. Honoring continuous improvement principles and teamwork, we will achieve another successful year.

As required by the current policy, holders of these credentials will be placed in an inactive status on their original deadline date of either December 31, 2015 or January 31, 2016, but will still be able to earn and report CEUs until March 31, 2016 and avoid credentials being revoked until this extension date.

Join AHIMA's Health Safety Identifiers Campaign in March
Starting March 20, AHIMA's members will take the lead in petitioning the federal government to lift the ban on activities that support unique health safety identifiers for patients-a core component of providing access to data and quality care. That day will kick off a petition requesting federal resources be made available to work with private groups, like AHIMA, on this important patient safety issue. We will have 30 days to capture 100,000 patient signatures on the electronic White House petition site. You can begin to familiarize yourself with that site now, at petitions.whitehouse.gov

Following this campaign's kick-off, State Advocacy Leaders will get a progress update at the Advocacy Leadership Symposium and Hill Day, April 4-5 in Washington, DC.
2016 Brings Modifications to HIPAA Privacy Rule
On January 4, 2016, the Department of Health and Human Services Department (HHS) modified the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule to permit certain covered entities to disclose to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) the identities of those individuals who, for specific mental health reasons, are prohibited by Federal law from having a firearm.
