News and Reflections from Farmer Tom

Let the Season Begin!

The farm has shed its winter coat and sprung alive! We are excited to welcome all our members, customers, supporters, and friends as we start our 18th Regular Season. I still get that same calling now as I did in 1996, when I dug the soil with a fork and spade to plant the farm's first potato crop - a desire to work the land and release the soil's fertile and nourishing bounty. Once again mother nature's call to join her for another seasonal dance is irresistible as she awakens from her 5 months of dormancy.  Dressed in vibrantly colorful flowers, tender green foliage, accompanied by bird song and sweet perfume, I surrender to her intoxicating energy and demanding rhythm.  Little will dissuade me from renewing my vows of stewardship while she whispers a promise of bountiful harvests and nourishing treasures.    Continue reading on our web site...

Crop & Field Notes

A Great Start to a Promising Fruit Season!

The dry and warm early spring weather promises for a bountiful fruit harvest. The bare limned orchards burst into bloom a few weeks ago, first the apricots and plums followed by pears, quince and apples. Strawberries are ripening, and we started picking a few last week. Their quantity will steadily increase, and by June I wouldn't be surprised if you will be freezing and jamming them. By the end of June, strawberries will be complimented by Santa Rosa and Satsuma Plums just as raspberries and blackberries are starting to come into production.

Heads up!  CSA Delivery Schedule Changes

For a multitude of reasons there have been fewer sign-ups this Regular Season, so we are reverting back to a "twice a week"  delivery schedule this year. This means some of you used to picking up on Thursday during the Regular Season will be picking up on Friday. We have also changed the routes around, so your pick-up time may also have changed even if your day did not. Though you will receive email reminders, please be pro-active and log in to your account, click on the "Pick-up Directions" tab (or look at your Summary) and make note of your location's day of the week and time of day for pick-up!  Thanks!
Request of our current CSA Membership

Since we have not yet filled our membership quota for the season, please help spread the word about your Farm and its CSA program. We welcome new members whether they are from your neighborhood, schools, businesses, professional organizations or churches. For a promotional packet, please contact Taylor at liveearthfarmshop@gmail.com. As a Thank You, we will include a $10 coupon good at our Farmers Market stands, our own on-Farm Stand, or at any of our upcoming Community Farm Days.
Seeking Pick-up Location in Palo Alto

During the last Regular Season we had to stop our downtown pick-up location at Vino Locale, a convenient location for many years. We'd like to deliver to a second location in Palo Alto, ideally around the downtown or University area again. If you, friends, or a local  business, church or organization in the area might be interested to host a pick-up location, please let us know. There are a few responsibilities that come with it but also some nice perks. Please email the office at farmers@cruzio.com if you can help us with this.  Thank you!
Debbie's Kitchen 2.0 - Tips & Techniques

I want to talk about beets. Simple, beautiful beets. Not beet recipes, but the Tamar Adler-inspired process of handling them, preparing them, and then being comfortable with deploying them over the course of a week in various guises. I by no means exhaust all the things you can do with them here; all I want to demonstrate is that this is easy. I think sometimes people are daunted by beets, and they shouldn't be.  Go to Debbie's blog...
Rebecca's Recipes

A grand welcome to SPRING and all its glory! I am so excited to start getting my CSA share again. Much appreciation is sent to Farmer Tom and all those who have been working so diligently  and lovingly to provide the finest bounty! Enjoy these lovely Spring days with the soft winds and singing birds. Everything is sprouting and shouting LIFE! So now to the kitchen with some health supportive recipes to honor ourselves, family, and friends with the amazing goodness from the farm.Until next week, I hope you dance in your kitchens with JOY!
