MORGANTOWN, W.Va.--Northeastern Area pathologist Danielle Martin and entomologist Amy Hill provided assistance to West Virginia Department of Agriculture and West Virginia Division of Forestry personnel to examine stands with declining red oaks on the Seneca State Forest. Tree ring analysis of three cut trees showed a severe decrease in growth over the last several years. Molecular diagnosis of tissue samples from cankered regions indicated that the fungus Diplodia corticola was the causal agent. This is the first discovery of this pathogen in West Virginia.
