Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is approaching thus many people will be looking for that special someone, cue online dating. Why? Online dating is an inexpensive tool that helps you set a criteria for future partner's to meet before you determine if they are a viable partner. There is also the added benefit of convenience because in today's modern world, everything is fast paced so there is no time to meet up and get to know someone. The effect of dating from the comfort of your home also brings a sense of security to you, however, be careful, this sometimes gives people a false sense of security unknown to them.

Romance Scams

Many people have been caught in online romance  scams where the scammers have successfully convinced the victim that they are "the one" and by entrusting the scammer, have lent them large sums of money to help them in their financial needs but do not hear from them once this transaction occurs. Victims have also been duped into giving out credit card details and then received bills for purchases they never made. Without physically meeting someone, it's hard to determine if they are genuine. Scammers are very experienced in what they do. There are some factors that can help you prevent getting trapped in one of these  scams, for example, poor spelling and grammatical errors (this is not always the case). There are also advertisements on the dating website that can interest you and once clicked upon, they take you to an unsecured website where you may be open to a cyber-attack.
Safe Strategies

There are always safe strategies that one can follow if you do choose to date online:
  1. Assess the level of relationship you want, e.g. - casual/friendship, long term etc.
  2. Perform a due diligence on the person
  3. Ask questions
  4. Never give out personal information e.g. - home address, work address, credit card details
  5. If you do consider meeting someone, meet in a public place and ensure at least 1 person knows where you are. You may even have someone accompany you and remain in the near vicinity.
