As a part of our Marriage Task Force Action plan we want to work with the church, and with you to strengthen marriages.  The truth is that almost half of marriages still end in divorce and the picture isn't much different in the church.

Why is this happening?  We've learned that part of the problem is the lack of support for couples after they say "I do".  We found that most churches in North Dakota have excellent premarital counseling, but don't offer much after the ceremony.  This is not a good situation when often times a couple doesn't reach out for help until they are in a marital crisis.

"So often we think of a marriage ceremony as the culmination of a courtship process.  But in reality, it is only the beginning."
- Les & Leslie Parrot

One way we can help to change the divorce statistic is to train couples to be marriage mentors; to come alongside other couples and help them in their marriage.  Here is some basic information about marriage mentoring:

The Definition of a Marriage Mentor:
A relatively happy couple, more experienced couple purposefully investing in another couple to effectively navigate a journey that they have already taken.

A Marriage Mentor Is:
  • Willing to share
  • Interested in another couple (heartfelt interest)
  • Patient, supportive, knowledgeable, and encouraging
  • Humble - Views themselves as an equal

A Mentor Is Not:

  • A parent
  • A professional counselor
  • "On call"
  • A forever commitment
  • A professor or "know-it-all"
  • There for the purpose of socializing

"No one expects a mentor to be perfect - only genuine and honest."

- Les & Leslie Parrot

Will you prayerfully consider becoming a marriage mentor?  Will you consider helping us strengthen marriages?  We have good news for you....

"Nothing provides more security and peace in a child's life than knowing a mom and dad are deeply in love."

Let's strengthen marriages within the church before it's too late - before marriages go into crisis.  Let's save marriages for the future of our children, for the future of our families, and for the future of North Dakota!

Sincerely,
North Dakota Family Alliance
