Ironman Chattanooga Training Camp Article

Training Table

Several thousand elite athletes will arrive in Chattanooga this September for the city's first Ironman event, and they are going to be looking for nutritious and delicious food to eat. And eat. And eat. Up to 6,000 calories/day.

Nutrition is so crucial to the Ironman that the organization's website devotes extensive space to the topic. Every athlete, though, has a different idea of the best diet; some are vegans, some eat lots of meat; some swear by high carb diets, others swear by gluten-free.

So, when South Carolina-based triathlon coach Katie Malone hosted athletes from around the country at an Ironman Chattanooga training camp recently, she carefully researched local restaurants. And she chose to bring the 22 triathletes attending her camp to 212 Market.

"I needed to make sure that there was enough variety that it would satisfy everyone," she says. "I like really healthy, clean, and interesting food. I'm looking for an eclectic blend, things that are a little bit different, maybe more local flavor and healthy, which you can't find at every restaurant. So when I looked at the 212 Market menu, I thought okay, there are things here that I want to eat, and if I want to eat them, other people will want to eat them. And then with the gluten free and the vegan and the vegetarian options, there was just a nice collection of foods."

While the location of the restaurant is convenient, Malone says, it was the food that was the real draw: "Even if we had to drive to a restaurant that had a menu like this, I would have gotten everybody in the cars and we would have driven."

As it was, all of the triathletes walked from their downtown hotel to 212 Market for dinner on a Saturday evening after riding the entire 112-mile bicycle course through the North Georgia countryside earlier in the day.

"There are a lot of advantages to knowing what the course is like and what the terrain is like, and also how the roads are and where the turns are. It just gives you an advantage because you can visualize what you have ahead of you," Malone notes. Knowing about a great place to eat before arriving in town for the race is also an advantage, she agrees, "And I know for me, finding this restaurant, I'll be back here."

Huma Energy Gel

Energy Gels & Exercise

Hma energy gels are specifically designed to help you get through tough exercise. How? Let's take a look at the science!

Your Body as a Power Plant

When your muscles need energy, the first source they go to is the glucose in your bloodstream. Glucose enters your bloodstream in one of two ways: by being digested from food, or from your body's glycogen stores (stored excess glucose). When you're sitting around after a meal, your blood glucose level is more than adequate to take care of your physical exertion. When you're exercising, however, it's not.

In order to keep your muscles operating at their best during exercise, your body dumps glucose into them. Most people have enough glycogen stores to sustain them for about 60-90 minutes. Once the glycogen stores are gone, your body is forced to turn to fat as an energy source. The problem with using fat as an energy source is that it's not a quick source of energy, so your body will be unable to sustain high levels of exertion (>60% VO2 Max). This is called "hitting the Wall."

For anyone trying to complete some difficult exercise, this is not a problem you want to face.

Energy Gels to the Rescue

Hma energy gels are one of the best ways around this problem. By consuming Hma's special carbohydrate blend before and during exercise, you supply your body with extra glucose through digestion. This allows your glycogen stores to last longer.

While there are many potential sources of carbohydrates, Hma energy gels are a great balance between having a lot of liquid sloshing around in your stomach and eating solid food which can take too long to digest effectively.

Hma energy gels pack a strategic carbohydrate punch of 100 calories/21g carbohydrates per pouch since the average person can digest 100-150 calories per 1/2 hour. On top of that, Hma energy gels specifically use carbohydrates known to efficiently convert into glucose.

So whether you're playing sports with friends or 3 hours into a triathlon, Hma is a great-tasting, all-natural way to get the energy you need!

When To Use?

Anyone planning on exercising can benefit from eating a Hma energy gel. While everyone is different, here is a general guideline for use until you figure out what works for you:

  • Less than 2 hours of exercise: eat one gel 30-45 minutes before exercise, and then one 45-60 minutes into exercise.
  • More than 2 hours of exercise: eat one gel 15 minutes before exercise. Eat another gel 45-60 minutes into exercise. After that, eat an additional gel every 30-45 minutes of exercise.

Remember: WATER!!

Always drink water when you eat a Hma energy gel! Your body can't process the gel effectively without it. Our recommendation is 8-10oz of water per gel.

He requests volunteers from 7-10AM but I think last year it never took more than an hour and a half or so. This is just a nice way to be able to give back to our sport.

Last year we supplied volunteers for every race in this series - can we do it again? Please contact Steve Baker directly if you can help out.

HGF Looking for Course Marshals
We need 5-6 volunteers from Malone Coaching on October 25th to man Syuka Mountain in Tryon from 10-2.

On Saturday October 25th for the 3rd year, George Hincapie, retired world class professional cyclist along with family and friends are hosting a Gran Fondo in our area!  Hundreds of cyclists will be pedaling in our backyard and it is time for us to showcase our area and its beauty!  The ride/event planners are looking for many volunteers to make this ride a success.

The most critical need is for course marshals.  Course marshals provide safety for the riders by letting them know about upcoming changes in direction or dangerous descents and hairpin turns.  Course Marshals also provide notification to motorists in the case of slowing traffic.

Course Marshals are needed all along the route from 9:00AM until about 2:00PM with our most critical areas being around Lake Lanier in Tryon, up and down Skyuka Mountain, and any other possible high-traffic areas.

Besides front row seats to all of the action and being able to see professional riders on our roads, all volunteers will receive the following for their time and efforts:

A cyclist musette bag (aka "feeder bags") full of goodies like an official Rider's Guide, an offical Volunteer t-shirt, Hincapie water bottle, coupons to local events and businesses, Hincapie socks, and an official event bottle of wine!  Course Marshals are also invited back to the beautiful Hotel Domestique for a FREE, family-friendly festival with live music, inflatable rides for kid, food, beer, and a chance to meet the professional riders!  Just wear your volunteer t-shirt for entry.
For just a few hours of your time on a beautiful fall Saturday come out and support professional and local cyclists as they pedal though our area all for a great cause!  The procedes from the ride go to and support the Greenville Meals on Wheels which means you would also be supporting a great, local charity.

If you are interested and available, please contact Kimberly Morgan event organizer directly at [email protected] or local contact Katie Malone 864-415-5804.

SCTAC-Summer Time Trial Series

SCTAT Time Trial Series Information

August 14, 2014.----CANCELLED!

Hi Spinners,

It is with regret that we will have to CANCEL the last time trial of the Summer Series which was scheduled for Thursday, August 14th.  Repaving of Perimeter Road has started and SCTAC has requested that we SUSPEND all riding and racing on Perimeter Road until further notice.  Unfortunately this was just not our year for the Time Trial Series with the weather and all but we are glad that we were able to have the most important time trial of the season in July!  At least next year you all will have a wider, smoother and safer road to race on!!!

Enjoy the rest of your summer, pedal safe and thank you to all the sponsors, volunteers and participants who helped make this event possible!

Lake Lure Olympiad Triathlon

Anchored by the USAT sanctioned Lake Lure Triathlon, which is part of a "3 Races in 3 Days Challenge," athletes every year say it is the scenic beauty and abundance of welcoming volunteers that make the Olympiad's triathlon special and unique."

Tryon Half Marathon
Saturday November 15th, 2014

Malone Coaching proudly sponsoring this event!

Race starts at 8am

Course closes at 11:30am

The Tryon Half Marathon is the perfect course for first-timers and those who appreciate a softer surface without going fully "trail!"

It will be hard to find a flatter, more scenic mountain course than this one. Fall temperatures and a mostly packed dirt/gravel course that meanders along a riverside through Tryon's famous "horse country" are all that is needed to make this an unbelievable 13.1 mile experience.

Please see coupon below for discount on registration!
I am putting on the running clinic for the Tryon Running Club at Harmon Field from 8-9:30 AM on Saturday morning to help runners get ready for the Tryon Half Marathon. Looks like it is free!
