From the Director's Desk

The Foundation has been honored to work closely with both our retirees and our alumni who are choosing to give in support of the students of A-B Tech.  Many readers will remember the hours of "STEM" instruction from Carl L. and Marie Love Cochrane.  Marie and Carl have generously supported their endowment begun by Carl to honor Marie; this endowment will award scholarships for students completing their second year at A-B Tech.

During this season of giving, it has been amazing to see our "alums" choosing to make gifts to the Foundation in support of their alma mater and its students.  A recent gift was received by a graduate now employed at A-B Tech!  Give me a call to learn how your gift will make a difference!

Employees who give through our Universal Campaign are making contributions to A-B Tech's Foundation, as well as, the work of United Way, Eblen Charities Employee Emergency Fund.  Thank you!  Your gifts, no matter the size, are truly changing lives and building stronger communities.

Thank you to Chris McGuire for his years of service to the Office of College Advancement.  We wish him all the best as he and his wife relocate to Washington State!

Happy Holidays!

Student Spotlight  - Terrah Borsh

We recently sat down with A-B Tech student Terrah Borsh, a recipient of the Grace Joan Love Schneider Endowed Scholarship through the A-B Tech Foundation for the current academic year.

Terrah is enrolled in A-B Tech's RIBN (Regio nally Increasing Baccalaureate Nurses) Program, a unique four-year program hosted by A-B Tech and Western Carolina University that allows students to earn their associate's and bachelor's degrees in Nursing through classes hosted by both institutions.

Terrah is quick to credit her three children as her reason for attending and working hard at A-B Tech.  In January 2014, she gave birth to a daughter Camila, her third child.  Camila was born with a rare form of muscular dystrophy.  Terrah describes this as "the hardest time of my life because I felt like I was all alone."  However, through working through and seeking to understand her dau ghter's situation, she grew inspired to continue learning more in a way that would allow her to help others.  She had always had an interest in pursuing Nursing school, but never felt she had the time.  With Camila and her two young sons, Evan and Carter, as her inspiration, she began taking classes at A-B Tech in January 2015.

Returning to school after so many years was daunting at first for Terrah.  She credits her instructors at A-B Tech with helping her find her way during that initial semester.  In fact, it was instructor Jennifer Voigt who initially pointed her towards the RIBN Program during her first semester taking classes.  Terrah applied for the program and was accepted for the term beginning August 2015.

In addition to her studies and the demands of parenting, Camila currently works 45 hours a week at a local restaurant.  Although it's certainly challenging balancing schoolwork, kids, and a full time job, she has faith that it will pay off in the end for her and her family.  In fact, in spite of her demanding schedule, Terrah was proud to report that she currently holds a 4.0 GPA - a remarkable achievement.  She was also selected as A-B Tech's Student of the Month this past September.

Once she completes the RIBN Program, Terrah's goal is to pursue her Master's at Western Carolina University and eventually work in pediatrics, potentially working with special needs children.  She also hopes to find opportunities to raise awareness about muscular dystrophy.

Reflecting on the impact of her scholarship, Terrah stated, "When you're a mother, money is a stress. The opportunity to have a scholarship not only helps pay for books and school, but it also takes so much stress off."  It's an opportunity that Terrah doesn't plan to waste, sharing that one of her goals is to show her kids the importance of education and that "nothing is impossible."

Working to Enhance the Smith-McDowell House
This year, A-B Tech worked closely with the Western North Carolina Historical Association on two projects related to the Smith-McDowell House.  First, a $16,500 grant was awarded by the Glass Foundation to fund the restoration of the gardens and grounds using the original Olmsted plans.  In addition, a $28,200 grant was received from the NC Historical Preservation Office to evaluate and develop plans for addressing roof and other repairs.

Thomas W. Simpson Scholarship Endowment
A-B Tech is honored to announce the establishment of the Thomas W. Simpson Scholarship Endowment.  This endowment bears the name of a beloved former A-B Tech President, "Tom" Simpson.

At the November 19 Harvest Buffet in Magnolia, the daughters of Tom Simpson, with their husbands, were recognized for their contributions to this important endowment. The Simpson Endowment will serve many students in the years to come.

Sharon Simpson Purcell, and her husband, Robert, along with Brenda Simpson-Taylor, and her husband, Vernon Taylor, joined President Dennis King and his wife, Jan, at the recognition.  Presidents Emeritus K. Ray Bailey and Harvey Haynes, and Glenda Bailey and Jean Haynes,  enjoyed reconnecting with the Simpson daughters and their husbands.  Afterwards, the group enjoyed a tour of Fernihurst, where a group photo was taken.

Students are urged to visit www.abtech.edu/scholarships  to apply for the Thomas W. Simpson Endowment scholarships.  These scholarships are for any curriculum program at A-B Tech and the annual award is $1,000.

I urge our readers to consider a gift to the A-B Tech Foundation!  You may contact me at (828) 398-7176 or   [email protected].   Online gifts may be made to www.abtech.edu/donate. Charitable contributions are tax deductible.
