Farm News & Tom's Reflections

The Hands that Feed Us

Last time I took a group of kids on a farm tour I stopped by the carrot patch and showed them how we dig and pull carrots out of the ground then tie them into a bunch with a rubber band. Digging for carrots almost rivals the excitement kids get when picking strawberries. There is something special about tugging on a bunch of leaves not knowing exactly what will appear out of the ground - like going treasure hunting. One of the kids asked me almost incredulously, "You dig all these carrots by hand? " "We sure do, every single one of them", I confirmed. Although we now have tractors and mechanical tools to help us, small scale organic vegetable and fruit farms like ours rely mostly on hand labor. It is a collective and manual effort - from sowing the seeds, planting, weeding, cultivating, watering, harvesting, washing, packing to finally delivering the shares.

Summer Camps at Live Earth Farm

Live Earth Farm Discovery Program Summer Camps offer a unique opportunity to engage with the food the Farm grows.  Campers get their hands dirty exploring pieces of the Farm's 150 acres, learning about life as an organic vegetable farmer, and discovering the benefits of humane livestock management by assisting with the daily chores caring for our goats and chickens.

CSA Members Comment

We have the most wonderful CSA Members, and our new Choice Share has turned out to be a great addition.  Here are some of the comments we've recently received:

I have been a member of two other CSAs in the past. This one is THE BEST. - Barbara B.

I just want you to know that I feel like a ROCK STAR now that I'm getting the CHOICE SHARE box. It feels like I've got a BACK STAGE PASS and FRONT ROW SEATS at LEF being able to be more in control of what I get each week. We were long time regular CSA members, then when kids came, it became more difficult to consume even the small share and had to stop. This new option is perfect for us and we're back again. Thank you for creating this CHOICE SHARE - Loving It!!
- Sandy S. & Family

I just picked up my first choice share and I am thrilled.  Hooray!  so glad you are doing this. I took the winter season off from LEF CSA, but was soon missing my LEF fresh veggies.  Now I'm back and able to choose. So nice. Thank you for making the extra effort to make these choices possible.  It's renewed my commitment to LEF. - Laurel P.

...it has been great getting to choose vegetables each week.  My family has many food allergies and it will be especially handy during the main season! - Karen S.

If you've been thinking of joining our CSA, now's the time.  There are still Choice Shares available and the summer season is upon us, which means more abundance and variety in what we grow.

Goat Milk Shares

Lynn Selness of Summer Meadows Farm raises dairy goats on her small farm on the flanks of Mt. Madonna. For several years now she has been offering a raw goat milk share with options like kefir, yogurt, and fresh chevre. We are happy to let new folks know about Lynn's shares, as well as remind past year members, too. The main thing you need to know is - you sign-up directly with Lynn, not Live Earth Farm. She can be reached at 831.786.8966.

Lynn delivers her shares to Happy Girl Caf in Pacific Grove and Main Street Garden & Restaurant in Soquel; and LEF delivers for her to our Willow Glen location.
