Bridget Beran – Communications
Bridget Beran, Claflin, Kan., has been selected as the 2014 American Hereford Association (AHA) communications intern. Bridget just wrapped up her sophomore year at Kansas State University (K-State), where she’s majoring in journalism and mass communications with a minor in political science.
Bridget has a long history with the Hereford breed, having been raised on her family’s Hereford (B&D Herefords) and Angus (Beran Brothers Angus) operation. She has been involved in the Kansas Junior Hereford Association (KJHA) for 10 years and is currently the treasurer of KJHA. She served as the Kansas Hereford Queen from 2010 to 2012.
At K-State, Bridget has been honing her writing skills while working for the campus newspaper, The Collegian, and staying busy with collegiate cattlewomen and Alpha Chi Omega.
Bridget will put her skills to use working on marketing and communication projects including writing for the Hereford World.
Rachael Carlson – Junior Activities
Rachael Carlson will serve as the AHA junior activities intern this summer. Rachael, Plattsburg, Mo., grew up involved in the beef cattle industry and is currently a junior at Oklahoma State University (OSU), majoring in food science.
Raised on her family’s Maine-Anjou operation, Rachael is a past secretary and vice president of the American Junior Maine-Anjou Association. She’s also an active member of the Alpha Zeta Honor Society and OSU’s Block & Bridle. Rachael was also a board member of the Missouri Junior Cattlemen’s Association and the Missouri Club Calf Association.
Rachael’s duties will focus on the JNHE in Harrisburg, Pa., as she will manage the JNHE Ambassador team and help the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) board with the organization of the contests and events. She will also work closely with the entry process and assist with marketing and social media and communications to the exhibitors, state advisors and all JNHE attendees. In addition to assisting with the JNHE, she will be instrumental in coordinating the PRIDE Convention in Springdale, Ark.
Amanda Sales – Publications production
Amanda Sales, Valley Falls, Kan., has been selected as the 2014 Hereford Publications Inc. (HPI) production intern. Amanda just finished her freshman year at K-State, where she’s majoring in agricultural communications and journalism with minors in Spanish and agronomy.
Growing up, Amanda developed a passion for agricultural communications, serving as editor of her high school yearbook and as a member of the Future Business Leaders of America and 4-H.
At K-State, Amanda is a member of the College of Agriculture Scholars Program, Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow and Alpha of Clovia.
Amanda will put her skills to work assisting with Hereford World production along with creative service projects such as sale catalogs, newsletters and fliers.

The May BuyHereford.com entry deadline is Friday, May 9. This is an excellent marketing opportunity! Consignments can include females, bulls, steers, pairs, donor dams, show prospects, embryos, semen, commercial female lots, recipient cows, groups of feeder calves, or picks of herd or flush rights. Additional consignments could include ranch or show equipment.

Texas All Star Sale Cancelled
The 29th Annual Texas All Star Memorial Day Sale scheduled for Monday, May 26, 2014, at KB Cattle Co., Wills Point, Texas, has been cancelled. Please note that an ad for this sale will be published in the May/June Hereford World as the sale was cancelled after the magazine went to print.
Support the Juniors
The Hereford Youth Foundation of American (HYFA) will host its fifth annual golf tournament with all proceeds to benefit the foundation. Hosted in conjunction with the JNHE, the event will kick off at 8:30 a.m. July 8 at the Hershey Country Club, Hershey, Pa.

HYFA supporters will have the best seats in the house at the 2014 JNHE in Harrisburg, Pa. Hereford enthusiasts can join the Hereford Foundation Club and have access to the “club lounge” and “club loft” in Harrisburg as well as earn other perks for their support of Hereford youth. Club members and those interested in joining the club are invited to a welcome reception at 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 7. The “club lounge,” located in the Commonwealth Room, will be open from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, through Friday, July 11. The “club loft,” overlooking the showring, will be open while the shows are taking place Wednesday, July 9, through Saturday, July 12. There are four levels of membership, but benefits include a special membership pin, access to the VIP parking area and admittance to the club area.

The Spring 2014 edition of The Advantage newsletter is available at Hereford.org.
Before you know it we will all be gathering for “A Sweet Family Tradition” in Harrisburg, Pa. However, before we get to Pennsylvania, there are a lot of details that will make your life a little easier as you plan to be a part of the big event July 5-12. Don’t Miss Your Chance to Advertise in the Hereford World
Advertising deadlines for the July or Herd Book issue of the Hereford World are coming up.
Final deadline: May 16
The eighth edition of the Hereford Register will be published as a special section in the July Hereford World. These “yellow pages” of Hereford breeders throughout the U.S. and Canada will include basic listings of July 2014 advertisers with a quarter-page or larger ad and July 2014 seedstock advertisers.
The Hereford Register listings include: name, address, telephone, e-mail and website. Listings can be purchased for $50 if you are not a July advertiser meeting the aforementioned specs.
Deadline for submissions: May 2
The July Hereford World will once again include a section that features state inch ads for $150. This information includes: name, address, phone, e-mail, website, herd sires, AI sires, cow herd breeding and sale date (optional).

Hall of Fame, Merit Nominations Due June 1
Nominations for the Hereford Heritage Hall of Fame and Hereford Hall of Merit are due June 1.
The Hall of Fame honor recognizes Hereford breeders who’ve dynamically influenced the direction and advancement of the Hereford breed. Hall of Merit recipients aren’t necessarily Hereford breeders but have, in their own ways, greatly influenced the Hereford breed and the cattle industry.

PRIDE Convention Heads to Arkansas
The 2014 Faces of Leadership PRIDE Convention will be July 27-30 in Springdale, Ark. Please visit JrHereford.org for a complete schedule of events and plan to be a part of a fun-filled week of leadership, networking, touring and much, much more.

All birth, weaning, yearling and ultrasound data must be submitted by June 1 to be included in the fall 2014 evaluation.
4th International Beef Cattle Welfare Symposium
Registration is now open for the 4th International Beef Cattle Welfare Symposium that will be held in Ames, Iowa, July 16-18, 2014. Speakers from the U.S., Canada, Australia, Brazil, and Ireland will address a wide variety of topics including discussions about beta-agonists, low stress cattle handling, the impact and mitigation of weaning and transportation stress and analgesic drug use. Greg Peterson of “The Peterson Farm Brothers” YouTube fame will be the guest speaker at the evening reception.
Registration for the symposium is $225 (including the preconference program) or $200 for just the scientific program if registered by July 1, 2014.

Plan to attend BIF Symposium and Convention
The 2014 Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) Research Symposium and Convention is set for June 18-21 in Lincoln, Neb. For nearly 50 years BIF has hosted its annual research symposium and convention. The convention serves to facilitate discussion and provide education on current issues facing the beef industry.

GE-EPD Results Update
If you want genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs) be sure to allow for plenty of time for the lab to get the results to you. Do not wait until the last minute. It takes a minimum of SIX weeks to get results after the lab acknowledges the sample, not when it arrives at GeneSeek.
