Major work finished on OPA Complete Streets project

The Village of Tinley Park recently announced that all major work on the Oak Park Avenue Complete Streets project is now finished, with parkway work to be completed by the end of September. Construction began in late May and included resurfacing and restriping of Oak Park Avenue from 183rd Street to South and Hickory streets. The project also included the creation of a 10-foot, off-street multi-use path from 183rd to 179th streets on the east side of Oak Park Avenue, as well as 4-foot bike lanes on the east and west sides of the roadway between 179th Street and South and Hickory streets. Oak Park Avenue also was slightly widened between 174th Place and South Street to accommodate the additional on-street bike lanes. Streetscape improvements such as removal of asphalt in the parkway, reducing curb cuts and adding landscape improvements and sidewalks throughout the construction limits also were performed. Trees and sod will be planted in the parkway by the end of September. The project was applied for through the South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association and funded with 80 percent federal funds and 20 percent Village funds. This 4:1 funding ratio allows the Village to minimize local taxpayer dollars spent on street improvements.

P.A.W.S. Pet Parade coming Sept. 14

In celebration of its 40th anniversary, P.A.W.S. of Tinley Park will hold its inaugural Pet Parade on Sunday in Downtown Tinley. The parade, which will step off at noon from Central Middle School and travel north down Oak Park Avenue, will feature Grand Marshal Anthony Ponce, an NBC 5 news anchor, as well as the Central Middle School Marching Band, canine demonstrations, martial arts demonstrations by Family Martial Arts, animal rescue organizations and All About Music Children's Theatre, which will perform excerpts from "Seussical the Musical." An after-party following the parade until 4 p.m. in Zabrocki Plaza will feature D.J. music, a dog boutique, food and beverages, face-painting, balloon animals and a marketplace of local pet-related business. While the parade is limited to organizations that pre-registered, all pets are welcome to view the parade and participate in the after party. All dogs must be social with other dogs and people. Dogs also must be up-to-date on their vaccines and be unafraid of noise. No retractable leashes are allowed. For more information, call Aimee El-Zayaty at (708) 805-0165 or email her at [email protected].

Ribbons to raise ovarian cancer awareness

The Tie a Teal Ribbon Foundation is tying teal ribbons along Oak Park Avenue throughout September in honor of National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Ovarian cancer often is a difficult cancer to treat because there is no early detection test for the disease. Women should consult with their physician if they have any symptoms which persist for two weeks or longer. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, indigestion, unusual fatigue, bloating or feeling full quickly while eating. Ribbons also will be displayed in other communities including Oak Forest, Palos Heights and Orland Park. For more information, email [email protected].
