Westland Police Department Acquires Multipurpose Hummer

Westland, MI - The Westland Police Department has added a new tool to its fleet of vehicles. The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) donated a 1991 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) to the Police Department.

The DLA is a government program that allows law enforcement agencies to acquire excess government assets free of charge for local use. The HMMWV, also known as a Hummer, was first used by the US Army in 1985 as a troop carrier, and saw its first combat in Panama in 1989.

"The City of Westland is honored to have been chosen to receive this vehicle," stated Mayor William Wild. "This unique piece of equipment will b a free addition to our crime-fighting fleet."

The Hummer provided a versatile tool for the military, and it will allow the Police Department to operate off road and in all weather conditions such as blizzards and flooding.

The vehicle will be able to transport up to four personnel, and it has four-wheel drive with run flat tires. According to Chief Jeff Jedrusik, the Hummer will be added to the department's Tactical Response Unit.
