From the Paid Sick Leave law to Equal Pay Day, women's issues have been placed at the forefront of the New York City Council. Earlier this week, my colleagues and I were joined by NYPD Commissioner William Bratton and community advocates to raise awareness of Denim Day. The clothes we wear is not an invitation for sexual assault but a form of self-expression. As Chair of the Committee on Women's Issues, I am confident that this progressive legislative body will continue to prioritize these issues as we work collaboratively to protect women in New York City.
In partnership with Pearls for Her and the Brooklyn NAACP Branch, my office hosted a series of workshops around autism and safety. Recent news reports have shown the various vulnerabilities of this increasing population. Autism Awareness should never go unrecognized, but serve as a reminder to empower communities of color with the knowledge and resources to keep their children out of harm's way.
We are experiencing a housing crisis across all five boroughs as tenants and renters are being rightsized or priced-out of their communities. I proudly stood on the steps of City Hall alongside my colleagues and residents from Tivoli Towers to demand a moratorium. The incoming NYCHA Commissioner, Shola Olatoye, met with the residents of the five housing developments within this District to address concerns and garner feedback from the audience of nearly 200 people to enhance the agency.
The work continues, and I really need all of you to get involved by attending community meetings, voicing your concerns and sharing creative solutions to solve our greatest challenges. Your input plays an invaluable role in how we govern our city.
Connect with my office and let me know how I can be of service to you, our district and citywide.
Yours in Partnership,
Laurie A. Cumbo
