SCAEA December 2015 Newsletter
President's Palette
Our 2015 SCAEA State Conference provided exciting opportunities for staff development, collaboration, and connecting.  Beaufort and USCB were wonderful hosts. Our SCAEA board members; USCB administration, faculty, and staff; Mayor Billy Keyserling; Tourism Director Robb Wells; and many talented SCAEA members worked through out the year to plan events and prepare workshops. We are truly grateful for the talent and time devoted to making this a successful event.

With over 100 sessions and events, it was a valuable and busy weekend. Special events included plein air sessions, our Artists Bazaar under the Pavilion, an iron pour, and featured speakers, Eliot Dudik and Seymour Simmons. Another highlight of the conference was the opportunity to hear from Carrie Ann Power as our new state art associate. As this session we were pleased to unveil the new SCAEA R. Scot Hockman Teacher Grant. We recognized Scot's contributions through the naming of this grant. Scot has been an educator and a leader in arts education for over thirty years. At the state level, he has served as the president of both SCAEA and the South Carolina Alliance for Arts Education, a writer of curriculum standards and guides, and the Education Associate for the Visual and Performing Arts at the South Carolina Department of Education. At the national level, he has been recognized and called upon by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, U.S. Department of Education, and the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies. The purpose of these grants is to promote quality art instruction through program implementation and collaboration among art educators. The R. Scot Hockman Teacher Grant Program awards funds to SCAEA members to promote quality art education and student achievement through innovative instruction. The link below will take you to the online application.  The application and a letter of support is due by 5 PM on January 15, 2016.
Plans are already underway for regional conferences, Youth Art Month events, and our 2016 SCAEA State Conference - Mark your calendars now for November 18 - 20, 2106, and join us in Greenville!

I hope that you and your family have a wonderful holiday break.  This is a time of reflection and thanks.  I cannot adequately thank our SCAEA board, members, and friends for their guidance and support as I worked to try and provide quality programs and events for our members.  Our SCAEA board is an incredible group of passionate art educators.  I am so fortunate to have shared the responsibilities of SCAEA with this team.  As I pass the gavel to Catherine Campbell, I know that great things are in store for us. The best is yet to come!
With my sincere thanks,

Meg Skow

Administrative Division Information from Cindy Riddle
The SCAEA State Coordinator's Administrative Division Meeting was hosted by District One and the main topic of the agenda was Bill 516: Read to Succeed Act. The spirit and wording of this legislation recognizes that reading and writing in the arts disciplines should and is aligned to domain specific vocabulary and will be creatively recognized within the context of the arts classroom. Many arts advocates and educators were consulted as the law was written to ensure that the language included the visual and performing arts. As education reforms are created, collectively, professional arts associations recognize the importance of reviewing programs and activities to ensure that arts education is a vital part of this process. To this end, the arts education community seeks the support and strength of a collective voice. That voice includes students, parents, teachers, administrators, school board members, artists, other arts professionals, legislators, and the business community.  Our challenge is to continuously address issues concerning arts education in a decisive manner and to provide the best quality, comprehensive arts education for all South Carolina students. In attendance: Scot Hockman- Retired SC Department of Education, Carrie Power- South Carolina Department of Education Visual and Performing Art Associate and Director, Christine Fisher-Director of the Arts in Basic Curriculum Project, Larry Barnfield-College of Charleston, SC Arts Commission Board, Kathe Stanley, Field Specialist, ABC, Dr. Tom Stanley-Art Chair Winthrop University, Josh Padgett, Anderson School District Five Arts Coordinator and Cindy Riddle- Spartanburg School District One.
