Obama announced a new $35 million Education Department competition to train the best math and science teachers. He also announced and expansion of AmeriCorps to help teach science and math to 18,000 low-income students this summer, and national science and math mentoring projects in Chicago; Philadelphia; San Francisco; Allentown, Pennsylvania; Indianapolis; the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina; and Wichita, Kansas.

Research on STEM-Focused Schools Shows Mixed Results
Education Week

For those who are concerned that the nation is starving for students who specialize in science, technology, engineering and math, STEM-focused schools are a popular solution. In 2010, the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology called for 1,000 such schools to open in the next decade.  But the results of several new studies raise questions about the overall efficacy of this approach.

Bringing STEM Education to Underserved Communities

In California's San Francisco Bay Area, a nonprofit foundation has raised the bar for local students, with impressive results. In the nearby Central Valley, a like-minded program introduces children to art, along with a healthy dose of "soft skills" like creativity, relationship-building and teamwork. Meanwhile, across the country, an unlikely pilot from Miami who made aviation history has set up an academy to train those who'll follow in his footsteps. And in Albany, New York, a little-known college has committed increasing amounts of money and resources to educate what could be the next generation of young scientists.

Rural Students Less Likely to Take Core Sciences in High School, Report Says
Education Week

Students who graduate from rural schools are less likely than their non-rural peers to have completed a biology, chemistry, and physics course in high school, according to a new federal report. The National Center for Education Statistics released "The Condition of Education" on Wednesday, an annual report that examines more than 40 aspects of education in the nation, including enrollment characteristics, school populations, and postsecondary education costs.

Securing America's future in science, technology, engineering and math fields requires more than expanding opportunities for women. Promoting interest and opportunities for minorities also should be a national imperative, particularly as more than half of children born in the United States today are of minority descent.
