Greenwood Furnace State Park will hold its annual Spring Clean-up Day from 9 am to 12 pm on Saturday, April 19. Volunteers should report to the Blacksmith Shop for orientation and work assignments. Spring Clean-up Day is an excellent way to give something back to the parks by lending a hand in getting them ready for the summer. Volunteers will be asked to work on small and large clean-up projects and will be assigned to projects based on their skills, abilities and desires. Whipple Dam State Park will hold its annual Spring Clean-up Day from 9 am to 12 pm on Saturday, April 26. The event will be sponsored and led by the Friends of Greenwood Furnace. Spring Clean-up Day is an excellent way to give something back to the parks by lending a hand in getting them ready for the summer. Volunteers will be asked to work on small and large clean-up projects and will be assigned to projects based on their skills, abilities and desires. The Birding Cup is a Shavers Creek annual fund-raising tournament and is a contest among teams of birders to identify the most number of bird species in a twenty-four-hour period in the central Pennsylvania region. Teams must compete based on a set of Birding Cup Rules, and the winning teams are awarded with their prizes immediately following the contest at Millbrook Marsh Nature Center in State College, Pennsylvania.The Cup selects winning teams in four categories. The Birding Cup goes to the team that identifies the most species overall. The County Cup goes to the team that finds the most species while searching in only one county. The Potter Mug is for the best team with at least half of its members who have less than two years of birding experience. The Birding Boot goes to the team that identifies the most species traveling only by non-motorized means (walking, biking, canoeing).Our fund-raising goal for this year's Birding Cup is $12,000. Greenwood Furnace State Park will host a half-marathon race on Sunday, May 4, 2014. The third annual Greenwood Furnace Trail Challenge is an intense, rugged, single track half- marathon. A figure 8 route of rocky climbs and nasty downhills; it starts at Greenwood Furnace State Park, climbs to the fire tower, drops down in to Alan Seeger Natural Area before climbing back to the tower, and then returns down to the park.
