HAPPY NEW YEAR
JANUARY, 2016
ARE YOU ACADEMICALLY ELIGIBILE?
HOW DO I CALCULATE MY GPA?
This really is a 2 part answer:

1 - In order to be academically eligible to play NCAA Division I or II sports the student-athlete must be certified as eligible by the NCAA Eligibility Center.  The Eligibility Center use the following GPA conversion scale, AND only count your 16 NCAA eligible core courses.
                       GPA
A - 80 - 100        4
B - 70 - 79          3
C - 60 - 69          2
D - 50 - 59          1

2 - Individual Colleges will use their own conversion charts and will convert most of or all of your marks for admissions purposes.  There are numerous websites you can refer to for
calculating  your overall GPA.

Important - Student-Athletes must attain the required GPA for both the Eligibility Center and the individual school's admissions office.
HAVE YOU RECRUITED COACHES TO WATCH YOU
NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA, CIS
When targeting the 'right fit' it is important to keep your options wide open and target schools from the NCAA , NAIA, NJCAA (American) and the CIS (Canadian).

The American College programs all have Division I, II and III programs.   NCAA Division I and II offer athletic scholarships to the tune of over $2.7 billion annually.   NAIA, and NJCAA also offer athletic scholarships. NCAA Division III, while they don't offer athletic scholarships, they are very capable of putting together excellent financial packages for student-athletes.

CIS now offer student-athlete's scholarships up to $4000 annually.
MARKETING YOURSELF
A major myth is that if you are good enough coaches will find you.  Hence, an important part of the recruiting process gets overlooked in that student-athletes MUST market themselves to college coaches.  Athletes (with their parents help) that make a commitment to marketing themselves are way more successful in securing an athletic scholarship.

A great starting point is putting together an Athletic Portfolio that you can market yourself with.  Don't be humble - sell your strengths.

Then select 15-20 schools that would meet your academic and athletic needs and send them your portfolio.

THE RECRUITING PROCESS
AN ATHLETE'S PERSPECTIVE

by Julie Cryderman - Girls Lacrosse
NCAA Division I  -  Albany Great Danes

The recruiting process for me was very exciting but also very stressful.  I took my time trying to find the perfect fit and I am glad I did it that way to find Albany.  It definitely took time, and I was late with committing, but no school felt right until I visited Albany.  My advice would be to keep your options open, visit as many schools as possible and be patient, you will find your perfect school!
