February Chapter Meeting: Grill the Contractor was HOT
The February Meeting at the Governor Hotel was a smashing success! Some very distinguished local contractors were kind (and brave) enough to put themselves in the hot seat and take questions from our members and Twitter audience covering a range of topics. Thank you to our panel members: Corey Lohman, Emerick Construction; Chip Laizure, JE Dunn Construction; Marty Houston, Walsh Construction; Todd Duwe, Andersen Construction; Andrew Dykeman, Lease Crutcher Lewis; and our moderator, Brian Kiel. You all made this so much fun that we can't wait to do it again! Thank you to our sponsor: Husqvarna Group. READ A STORIFY RECAP HERE >

SpecLink-E User Group
Corey Morris, CSI, Board Secretary
Spec writing can be a lonely, thankless job, but spec writers do get to work with others - their design team! This will be our topic - working with our teams to verify scope, markup drafts, identify new products and obtain feedback during construction. Interface Engineering will give a short demonstration on the markup process used by their engineering teams - checklists, Bluebeam software, it's pretty sophisticated! Come prepared to learn and share.
Next Meeting:
Teamwork: Using SpecLink-E with Design Teams
Tuesday, March 18, 2014 12:00 PM
Interface Engineering, 708 SW Third Ave Suite 400, Portland, OR
If you use BSD's SpecLink-E software, you need to attend this group to get the most out of your software AND to save yourself time and effort.

Education Committee Report:
Lecture Series Successful
Cherise Schacter, CSI, CDT, President-Elect, Education Chair
The Education Committee is keeping the calendar full with valuable, cost effective lectures and classes to serve a wide variety of our members. Our January Post Occupancy Energy Performance & Trends Lecture by Mitch Dec of Glumac was very informative and all learned some things about energy efficiency. Our February Bluebeam for Design and Construction Class was sold out. Our speakers shared some great information, tools, tips and tricks for using Bluebeam to make project collaboration more efficient. Thank you to our sponsors Arc Document Solutions and Ideate, Inc. for generously providing the space, beer and pizza for this fun and interesting event. A very special thank you to our speakers for giving your valuable time to share your lessons learned with our members. READ MORE >

CDT Certification
Kathy Hempel, CSI, CCA, Certification Committee Chair
Last month, we inadvertently left out the picture of one of our scholarship recipients, Jake LaManna from Oh Planning and Design. Please congratulate him next time you see him.
Our CDT classes for spring of 2014 are well underway and our participants and scholarship recipients are learning all about the project delivery process.
Wondering how YOU can get in on this? Keep your eyes open for exam and resource scholarship opportunities for the fall exam and complete scholarship opportunities next spring. There will be more information on our website in the next couple of months.
Did you know that you don't have to be a member of CSI to take the CDT exam or classes? You can earn AIA CES and CSI CEN learning units while furthering your knowledge on the construction process. The CDT (Construction Documents Technologist) Education Program teaches a thorough overview of the design and construction process. It promotes an understanding of contractual agreements, roles, responsibilities, drawings and specifications, and construction delivery systems and how to consistently develop organized, effective construction documents.
Contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions or want more information about your options.

Kraken Rule #62:
Have You Expressed Your Gratitude?
Let's take a short moment to highlight a few of our amazing volunteers who bring you such rich and varied programs, events and education.
- Ellen Onstad, CSI, McGraw Hill Construction, Programs Chair - Ellen has been our Programs Chair for a number of years and works tirelessly every single month to bring us our awesome monthly chapter meetings. She is the type of person who is always willing to help, no matter the task at hand. That said, she is also one of the kindest, most giving people I have ever met. Thank you, Ellen!
- Kathy Hempel, CSI, DeaMor, Certifications Chair - Kathy bravely stepped up from CDT Instructor to chair our Certification Committee this year. Kathy is dedicated, motivated, organized and truly passionate about helping our members take this next step. In addition, Kathy is always a helping hand wherever she lands at CSI events. Thank you, Kathy, for all that you do.
- Industry Forum Committee Jody Moore, CSI, DeaMor; Tony Divincenzo, CSI, Ideate, Inc.; Alexander Lungerhausen, CSI, Hennebery Eddy; Corey Morris, CSI, Clark Kjos Architects; Jaci Amend, CSI, Melvin Mark Companies; Chris Ferguson, CSI; Skip Brown, CSI, Melvin Mark Companies; Bud Henson, CSI, Window Tech; Mark Miller, CSI, Skoler Building Resources; Don Stastny, CSI, Don Stastny Architecture - Over the past few years, this group has taken our old Products Fair format and transformed it into something innovative, inspiring, and current. They have brought notable names like the Stefan Behnisch of Germany, Bjarke Ingels Group of Copenhagen and this year, Snohetta of Norway, to Portland and created a signature event. They work very hard to make this world class, and we appreciate all that they do.
Next time you see one of these individuals, take a moment to thank them for their hard work and dedication to the Portland Chapter of CSI.

Construct 2014
Cherise Schacter, CSI, CDT, President Elect, Education Chair
September 9-12, Baltimore (Note corrected dates)
We have been informed that this year's CONSTRUCT coincides with the 200th birthday celebration of the Maryland War of 1812. If you have not yet attended CONSTRUCT, this would be an incredible year to start. I will be attending my third CONSTRUCT show in Baltimore, and I can say with full conviction that it is the highlight of my year. There is more education, events and fun packed into one week than I thought possible. I strongly suggest, due to events in the area, that you book your hotels early and get signed up. This is going to be an event-filled convention. Don't miss it! LEARN MORE >

Mt. Rainier Chapter Presentation
Cherise Schacter, CSI, CDT, President Elect, Education Chair
On February 6th, I presented Architect/Engineer Coordination: Closing the Gap to approximately 40 Mt. Rainier Chapter members. This was a very interesting and entertaining adventure. It happened to snow heavily that day and I could not get to Tacoma due to road conditions. Rather than cancel the meeting or offer a different program than what was advertised, we decided to get creative (as CSI Members do) and solve the problem.
Bob Kenworthy from Mt. Rainier kindly ran my slides at the event while I presented from my cell phone at home to a speakerphone at the event which was in front of a microphone so the audience could hear. Amazingly, it worked! Thank you to Bob and the Mt. Rainier leadership for taking what was a very stressful day and helping make it happen with positive results. THIS is what CSI is all about!
I will again be presenting this topic at the upcoming 2014 ASIC National Conference (American Society of Irrigation Consultants) on Monday April 28th in Portland at the Benson Hotel. LEARN MORE >

Call for Sponsors: CANstruction
Amber Corsen, CANstruction Committee Chair
Each month, 270,000 people eat meals from emergency food boxes; an astonishing 92,000 of those are children. That's enough to fill the Moda Center over 13 times! It is the Society of Design Administration's pleasure to work with Axium to put on CANstruction Portland 2014, a unique charity event to raise awareness and donations for Oregon Food Bank. Since its inception in 1997, the Portland CANstruction event has raised 906,818 meals for Oregon Food Bank. The goal for 2014 is to raise 150,000 meals. Your support of this worthy cause will make a direct impact on the fight against hunger. Sponsorships range from $250-$5,000.
