Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand met with student robotics enthusiasts at John F. Kennedy High School in Plainview Monday, touting two initiatives to boost interest and participation in science, technology, engineering and math, particularly among girls and minorities.

The Common Core Math Standards: Content and Controversy

When the "math wars" began in the 1990s, on one side were those who argued for a new focus on concepts and reasoning rather than drilling students on their times-tables. On the other were the traditionalists, who said the progressive approach allowed students to become unmoored from the building blocks of the subject, leaving them unprepared for more advanced mathematics. The writers of the Common Core math standards have sought a middle ground.
Next Gen Science Enters New Dimension

A new approach to assessing students' three-dimensional learning should soon give teachers a clearer picture of the reasoning their students are using to grasp key science concepts. This more intensive level of assessment will be a critical tool for schools implementing the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) that are designed to boost STEM scores.

Universal Technical Institute Celebrates "Tech on Wheels" Program

On Wednesday, February 19th, seventy computer science high schools students experienced a STEM day of computer problem solving at the Tech on Wheels event held at NASCAR Technical Institute in Mooresville, NC. The event was sponsored by Universal Technical Institute, the Computer Science Teacher's Association and Snap On tools. The students came from high schools in the Mooresville and Charlotte area. They were divided into teams and rotated through four classes; STEM, Vehicle Emissions and Exhaust Gas Analyzer, the use of hand held diagnostic systems in problem solving environments and computer use in NASCAR race cars.

Engineering Has Many Faces: National Engineers Week

The New Faces of Engineering program was created as part of the Engineers Week's celebration of engineering. By highlighting the contributions of young engineers, this program provides role models for children and young adults. It helps to demonstrate that careers in engineering can lead to meaningful, satisfying and life-enriching opportunities to make a difference in the world.

NASA to Showcase Link between Sports and Science
Daily Press
NASA is trying to spark interest in careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics - also known as STEM - by allowing K-12 students to participate in online sessions that will showcase how sports and science intersect.
