Do What You Can
Welcome  2016
What do you think he meant?
With all the chatter of New Years resolutions, goal setting, 365 turning pages, brand new and fresh  starts, I want to ask you to ponder this quote for just a few minutes.

"Do what you can, with what you have, where you are."

Theodore Roosevelt probably never thought his words would continue to be shared, long after his passing.  But when I read his quote it made me realize something.  We have no  excuses to not do anything.  Be it for yourself, your family, friends or total strangers. Just do something.
Introducing Phil!
Happy New Year!  I am excited to start 2016 by introducing myself as the Program Coordinator for the Winona County Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP)! In addition, I'm thrilled to once again announce that our coalition has received $500,000+ of federal funding to address alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) issues among youth, aged 12-17. You must know that volunteers before me have worked incredibly hard to make this possible, and we are all eager to see community-wide involvement to address these issues.

The Winona County ASAP began meeting in the summer of 2012 - consisting of community volunteers from different sectors (e.g. law enforcement, treatment providers, policymakers etc.) - and I began attending coalition meetings in the fall of 2013 as a graduate student. I was studying Addiction Counseling through Winona State University, and obtained an internship experience at the Family & Children's Center with the help of a coalition member. In the last 12 months, I completed my internship working with adolescents, and became a MN Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor (LADC). I am pleased to help our community learn about and address these issues, as many of us know at least one individual that has been affected by alcohol or other drug abuse.

You can learn more about Winona County ASAP and what we plan to do in 2016 by attending our next coalition meeting on Monday, January 25, 2016 from 2:30pm-4:00pm at Live Well Winona. If this meeting time conflicts with your schedule, and/or you have interest please contact me anytime via phone or email.
Let's make 2016 different!
