Welcome to the second edition of Delta's Newsletter.  Delta continues to strive to provide a full array of supports and opportunities that promote personal, individualized growth.  The brief articles you'll find in this edition provide a window into some of those opportunities, including core program services, athletics and other extracurricular activities, and individually-designed leisure pursuits.  The spring and summer months have been as busy as ever, as we have worked to expand our service profile, to enhance the professional development of our workforce, and to insure that each individual we support is central to plotting their own path forward.  We hope that each of you will find a means of assisting us in some small way - Delta's employees, and the individuals who are the focus of our efforts, will truly appreciate your having done so.

Thank you,

Delta Projects Passes licensing and recertification with the State

DDS's Office of Quality Enhancement completed its full licensing and certification review on August 14th.  Following a comprehensive review of 12 Delta Long Term Residential, ABI and Respite sites, Delta was rated to have achieved 97% compliance of licensing quality indicators, and 100% compliance of certification indicators, resulting in a Two-Year License.  The Executive Summary, which can be accessed on the DDS website, was highly complementary in the areas of service delivery, oversight and supervision of direct service staff, clinical serves, continuing education and development for individuals supported and personnel, self-advocacy initiatives, community involvement, and residential environments.  The licensure and certification review process serves a valuable role in measuring our services against best practice, and in informing and shaping our future efforts toward actualization of our mission and vision.

 Mr. Rooks goes to Washington

Michael lives in Weymouth with 4 housemates. This past August he and 3 of his housemates (along with 2 staff) went to Washington DC for a five day vacation.
It was a trip of firsts for Michael. He had never been on a plane before, he said he felt like he was "floating". He had never been to Washington DC before, that he could remember. Michael had been born in Virginia but his family moved to MA when he was very young. Michael states that he is afraid of heights, but he conquered that fear when he went to the top of the Washington Monument with his friends, Gerry, Blair, and Benson.
He also toured the Capitol. While in DC the men also visited the Smithsonians of American History and  The Air and Space , The Botanical Gardens, The Mall, Arlington National Cemetery, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam and Korean War Memorials and the World War Two Memorial.
If you ask Michael what some of his favorite parts of the trip were they were the hop on hop off bus, the Metro, seeing all the sights and being with his friends. Michael and his housemates had saved all year for this vacation. Michael is unsure of where his next vacation will take him, he thinks maybe a cruise to Bermuda.

If summer is over it must be time for basketball!

The Delta Hornets Softball team finished strong; coming in second place at the Rhode Island State Tournament on August 15th!  The Hornets also played hard in the Massachusetts's State Tournament on August 8th and 9th, coming home with a 2-2 record after a long, hot weekend in Springfield!  A special thanks to our team volunteers and staff; Admire Sousa, Brandon Williams, James Johnson, Cliff Parfait, Tyrone Tillman, Josmarlin Rosario, Darrin Ruffin, and Sharon Cabral!
The Delta Hornets Basketball team is back in action, as practice began September 1st.  With over 25 individuals and staff interested in playing, the two Hornets teams will be looking to take home gold this season!  The Hornets and Coaches Tillman, Colleen, and Marissa are looking forward to a great season!

In support of the Delta Hornets, supporter's t-shirts will be on sale in early October!  The cost of the t-shirts will be $10 each.

More life enhancing opportunities for people supported by Delta Projects

Delta Projects will be opening a new Community Based Day Supports Program (CBDS) this fall. The program is forging partnerships with community employers as well as other non-profits and local resources who may benefit from

CBDS is a great program model for many of the men and women supported by Delta because it is truly person centered. As they begin the program, each person has a Positive Personal Profile developed through interviews with program staff. The profile provides the groundwork to help understand what is important to each individual, identify activities they like and dislike, types of jobs that interest them and areas of personal growth they would like to address. CBDS also offers many options for community involvement through volunteering, pursuing hobbies and special interests as well participating in social and enrichment activities.

Individuals for whom work is not a primary goal will find a great variety of options in CBDS to enjoy meaningful activities throughout their days. Where competitive employment is the goal, people will be supported to define their career goals, develop a resume and learn appropriate interview skills and work behaviors. Program staff will work with each individual to locate appropriate job opportunities and will support them throughout the hiring and job training process. As with all Delta programs, we will provide people with the level of support that is necessary for them to succeed in achieving their goal.

Starting on September 14th we began a pilot program to teach skills needed to secure a community job. Seven individuals are participating in this fifteen class module that combines morning classroom instruction with afternoon community visits to businesses and work sites in the local community. Participation in this pilot will help Antonio, Linsey, Bobby, James, Bill, Trina and Joshua to define their work goals by opening their eyes to new experiences, new friends and new dreams.

The Intensive Flexible Family Support (IFFS)
Program is a service funded by the Department of Developmental Services. Its primary goal is to help maintain the integrity of families having one or more members with a disability who are experiencing severe stress, which is causing the child to be at risk for out of home placement.
Support for the family may include help navigating the Special Education System, coordination of services that may include medical services, therapies, behavior, training, educational services, etc., facilitating services that may include access to housing, transportation and other community resources as well as education and training for parents and caregivers in how to better cope with issues.
The IFFS program at Delta currently has 10 cases with varying levels of need and support.
Jevon, one of our current cases, is a very unique case. He carries a diagnosis of Aspergers and Anxiety Disorder. He recently entered his freshman year at Tufts University in Medford with a full academic scholarship. Jevon is a very bright young man who will go far in the academic arena but requires support with social and life skills as well as support in the various aspects of daily life on a college campus. We are working with Tufts University's Academic Support Counselors to ensure his future success. Jevon is just one of many children who have benefitted from help and support through the IFFS program here at Delta.

Students begin in week one exploring wants vs. needs and what their money values are. They also begin to look at what is income and what are expenses. In week two they begin to set up a personal budget and begin to make at making a commitment towards saving money (no amount is too small).
