In the summer of 2014, the magnificent city of Khabarovsk once again is just a few short flights from Anchorage via Yakutia Airlines. But Khabarovsk is not just about historic architecture, museums, rich culinary and cultural scene. The proximity of the taiga and the city's location on the banks of the great Amur River, provide great outdoor opportunities.

The Sikhote-Alin mountain range,  located in Khabarovsk and Primorsky regions, renowned for its unique wildlife, is on UNESCO World Heritage List. It has one of the richest and most unusual temperate forests of the world. In this mixed zone between taiga and subtropics, southern species such as the Amur tiger and Himalayan bear cohabit with northern species such as the brown bear and lynx. In the 1920s, Sikhote-Alin was extensively explored by Vladimir Arsenyev who described his adventures in several books, notably Dersu Uzala (1923), which in 1975 was turned into an Oscar-winning film by Akira Kurosawa.

Fishing in the wild and trekking to taiga forests are among favorite activities for tourists. Fishing for Siberian taimen, the largest salmon in the world, is the ultimate wilderness adventure with the ultimate reward. The largest verified specimen was over 109 kilograms - more than 240 lbs! Rivers in Khabarovsk region are considered to be the most taimen-rich waterways in the world.

Sister City Partnerships:

RECONNECT WITH YOUR OLD FRIENDS
THIS SUMMER

Eastern Russia and the West Coast of the US have long been linked by multiple sister city relationships. A friendly contact in a city in Russia may be just the catalyst you need to create an educational, business or cultural exchange. Great example is the Portland-Khabarovsk Sister City partnership and its Solid Waste Management Initiative (1999 - 2005) that played an important role in development of Khabarovsk's new, modern municipal waste collection and disposal system.

If you live in one of these cities, it may be time to reconnect.
