Instructor Spotlight -
Karen Morris

Karen Morris graduated with a masters from VSU in 2005 and currently teaches freshman composition here.

...in her own words...

"As a non traditional student, it took me 30 years to get my degree.
During those 30 years, my husband and I had a couple of businesses.
One of which was a country music label in Nashville, Tennessee.

However, when file-to-file sharing took the underpinnings of royalties
out from the traditional modes of label compensation, my husband
followed his second love of language, and I came along for the ride, discovering a passion as well in teaching.

Since then, my husband has passed, and I have learned as much as I can
about the web and social media. Understanding its assets are as great as its disrupting effects on established modes of commerce and
learning, my goal is to empower students in the changing digital

landscape."

Karen says her newest passion is

"the social web and what it means to education." She describes herself as being "parked all over the web using Google drive and sky drive."  Her activity on the web includes Facebook, Twitter, blogging and she has created a wiki to house all the tools she finds on the web as well as a clipzine showing resources for teachers.

Karen will be instructing two new courses for Continuing Education Spring 2014 beginning with Effective Business Blogging, March 31.
Creating Content for Social Media is scheduled for April 17.

The Gift of Learning....

It's always in style to give the gift of learning.  Consider giving a gift certificate for an individual class or an LIR membership.

A Word from Sue...

Spring is the time for new growth. Are you ready to bloom?

Grow yourself personally and professionally with classes for every part of your life. VSU Continuing Education is here to help you reach your full potential.

Staying in Touch

When was the last time you thought about your own professional development?

Because professional development benefits both employers and employees, it's important to continually update your skills and knowledge in order to remain proficient in your field and achieve your true potential.

Too late, many individuals who have lost their jobs have realized that by neglecting to expand their personal and professional skills, they have made themselves dispensable to their bosses.

A recently updated online article, Benefits of Professional Development, succinctly outlines many important factors regarding the whys, whens, and hows of improving your professional and technical skills.

VSU Continuing Education currently offers Career & Skill Building opportunities in Social Media and Marketing  that are designed to help you stay forward thinking in your career.

Learning in Retirement

It's Good To Be In LIR!

If you are 50 or over and looking for ways to keep your mind challenged and stimulated, you could take a cue from the VSU Learning in Retirement Mah-Jongg students.

Mah-Jongg is one of our most popular leisure courses with more than 20 students registered in each of the fall and winter terms this year! The spring 2013 group enjoyed themselves so much that they continued to meet on their own over the summer when LIR was not in session.

Mah-Jongg, taught by LIR member Elizabeth Burnette, is an ancient Chinese game designed to be played with four players. The VSU group follows the rules of Modern American Mah-Jongg. The object of the game is to make the tiles match up with a hand on a Mah-Jongg card using cards from the National Mah-Jongg League.

Offering the Mah Jongg course is one of the ways Learning in Retirement at VSU seeks to stay true to our mission of providing a unique opportunity for cultural growth, lifelong learning, and recreation.
