With kids' issues getting less attention than they deserve, Every Child Matters (ECM) is working with many local groups across the country to organize non-partisan Step Up Day events in state capitols and other venues on September 23. On that day, ECM and its partners will spotlight kids' issues for voters, the press, and candidates as the nation gets ready to vote in November. Join ECM! Here are other ways you can take action.

Issue Spotlight: What Exactly Is 'High-Quality' Preschool?

If you missed this NPR Ed segment in April, here it is again. NPR's Claudio Sanchez and Cory Turner asked this question: What is quality preschool? "It's difficult to debate the merits of early childhood education," they wrote,  "and to argue that every child - indeed, the nation as a whole - will benefit from better access to preschool, without first defining what exactly constitutes a 'high quality' model." NWLC's Invitation to a Conference Call on Expanding Pre-K

The National Women's Law Center invites you to join them for a conference call to hear about how New York City and Michigan, both of whom are expanding high-quality early education, are implementing pre-kindergarten - and how they're making sure the most hard-to-reach children have the opportunity to participate. Meet Nick Partsch

This Lincoln-resident, a retired newspaper ad manager, is a member of the Nebraska Early Childhood Grandparent Network. In this profile - one of many in our forthcoming Seniors4Kids publication - Partsch, a grandparent, explains the importance of high-quality pre-k for Nebraska's children and calls on his generation to encourage public officials to make the needed early education investments that will help Nebraska now and in the future. New Report Looks at Child Care Prices and Affordability

Colorado Children's Campaign, in partnership with The Women's Foundation and Qualistar Colorado, released a new report, the first in a three-part series, that explores why the state's working parents pay widely different amounts on child care based on their location. The report also looks at what drives prices and what can be done to ensure more Colorado families can access the quality care they need and ensure kids have stimulating experiences to learn and grow. Kentucky Child Care Subsidy to Cover 6,000 More Families

Thanks, in part, to awareness-raising efforts of Kentucky Seniors4Kids, the full restoration of funding to the Child Care Assistance Program will cover more children and families, especially those earning an income of 140 percent or less of the federal poverty level. According to a WFPL news report, youth advocates and child care owners applauded the state for expanding CCAP to cover more children. "That means that child care centers ...can sustain viable operations," Kentucky Youth Advocates Executive Director Terry Brooks said in a statement. "That means that the power of quality early childhood experiences in health outcomes and preparedness for school will deepen." Learn more

PA Commission Calls for Action in Support of Early Childhood Education

In an op-ed, the Pennsylvania Early Learning Investment Commission called for the Northeast Pennsylvania community to unite around strengthening early childhood education. "Decades of research substantiate the need for action," according to the Commission, which includes Denise S. Cesare, Peter Danchak, Chester Harhut and David Hawk. "Scientist have accumulated evidence into the benefits of high-quality early learning and we can now see a direct link between pre-kindergarten experiences and high school graduation rates."
