CASC Announcements

CASC Community Dialogue

Interested in learning more about dialogue? Want to explore your social identities? Join the CASC community for a student-sponsored dialogue on power, privilege, and social identity. Together we'll explore how our social identities impact the classroom and our work in the community. We'll also practice better communication skills for speaking across conflict. Dinner provided!

CASC at the major/minor expo
Have any friends who would be interested in the CASC minor? Want to look at picking up a second major or minor? Join us at the Major/Minor Expo this Wednesday, March 12 from 11 am-3 pm at the Michigan Union Ballroom! CASC staff will be available to answer questions about the minor and its requirements for any interested students. Staff from other departments will be available to tell you about their programs.

"We the Parents" Documentary Screening
Join the SSW Community Organizing Learning Community in viewing "We the Parents." This documentary about parents organizing for school reform in California is not yet available for general public viewing, so this is your best chance to see it in the near future! Screening will be followed by a panel discussion and video call with the producer.

While women remain a minority in governments across the country, their voices are louder than ever. This event will provide students with a great opportunity to hear from female leaders in Michigan and discuss why it's important to increase women's presence in government and activist organizations.

Diversity Beyond the Quota
The Advancing the Dream Committee presents an opportunity for students to learn about how anti-blackness frames the diversity discussion, and to look at policy and procedures development for particular areas on campus. Learn more and register here.

Global Health Symposium
This year's symposium's goal is to address global health challenges in the developing world and how we can better meet those needs by understanding those we serve from different cultural contexts. Three different speakers will be featured to inspire attendees, while initiating small group discussions to create new ideas for the future of the University of Michigan's role in global health. RSVP by March 12.

Call for Volunteers: Powwow
The 42nd Annual Dance for Mother Earth Powwow will be held on April 5 and 6. Powwow is looking for volunteers interested in helping for 2 hour shifts. All volunteers receive FREE admission to the event! Learn more and sign up here.

Sweetland Writing Center Seeks Conversation Circle Facilitators
Conversation Circles will provide multilingual students an opportunity to improve their spoken English in a relaxed environment. Each group includes 3-4 undergraduate international and multilingual students and is led by the Conversation Circle Facilitator. Groups meet once a week during the Fall term. Facilitators receive 1 credit. Learn more and apply here.

Equity Within the Classroom Conference Seeks Student Speaker
The Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives is looking for an undergraduate student speaker to address the audience of the Equity Within the Classroom Conference on Tuesday, April 1, 2014. U-M Social Justice Fellowship in Metro Detroit

Undergraduate students are invited to a U-M Social Justice Fellow during Summer 2014. Fellows join an educational team and facilitate the Summer Youth Dialogues on Race and Ethnicity in Metropolitan Detroit Program (SYD). SYD increases dialogue among high school age youth in metropolitan Detroit, the nation's most segregated metropolitan area. Bonderman Fellowship

The Bonderman Travel Fellowship offers four graduating seniors in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan the chance for an eight-month international trek. Each spring, four fellows will receive $20,000 to travel to at least six countries in two regions of the world, where they'll get to immerse themselves in independent and enriching explorations.  Learn more and apply hereApplications due March 24 at 11:59 pm.

 

Oxfam America Seeks Change Agents

Oxfam America is accepting 50 undergraduates entering their sophomore or junior year to attend a week-long training program in Boston, MA from July 19-25. All costs of attending the training will be covered by Oxfam. CHANGE Leaders will join or form an Oxfam Club and implement an Oxfam campaign on campus during the 2014-15 academic year. AFL-CIO Union Summer Internship Program

The 2014 AFL-CIO Union Summer internship program will be looking to recruit the best and brightest activists for a 9 week paid internship program that introduces students to the labor union movement. 2014 Union Summer internship dates are June 16 - August 15, 2014. MBA Prep Fellowship

Career Prep (CP) is an 18 month career leadership fellowship for underrepresented minorities graduating in Fall 2015 or Spring/Summer 2016. The CP program works with fellows interested in a variety of business industries (i.e, Consulting, Nonprofit/Govt, Tech/Engineering, Marketing, Finance and Media/Entertainment). Center for Progressive Leadership Spring/Summer Internship

The Center for Progressive Leadership is seeking an intern to help support a Michigan leadership development nonprofit, specifically with tasks related to the Economic Justice Alliance of Michigan, minimum wage campaign, and alumni engagement. Join a New Social Justice Student Magazine 

As part of the optiMize Challenge, a group of students plans to create a magazine that will share journalistic stories and photographs online and in print about people and organizations of all backgrounds relating to social equality. The magazine is looking for journalists, strong writers, photojournalists, a webdesigner familiar with WordPress and page designers familiar with InDesign.
