Medium Voltage Surge Arresters
Surge arresters, also known as lightning arresters, are an accessory often ordered on medium voltage transformers and reactors. They are typically connected between line terminals of a winding and ground. They provide a degree of protection for the transformer insulation system from high voltage surges. They are available for winding voltage ratings 2.4 kV and above.

A surge arrester is not to be confused with a Surge Protective Device (SPD), formerly known as a Transient Voltage Surge Suppressor (TVSS), which is applicable for voltage ratings 1000 V and below, not covered by this article. This article is intended to familiarize the reader with surge arrester application and accessories.

HPS Website Updates & Enhancements
A new and improved part number cross reference tool is now available on the homepage of the HPS website. Similar to the previous tool, users will be able to cross a competitor's part number to receive the equivalent HPS part number, but now it also includes features such as an expanded notes area for additional product information.

The cross reference tool also accommodates all of our new low voltage and medium voltage DOE 2016 compliant distribution transformers. Output results allow users to view the corresponding web page, product catalog page or catalog page in a flipbook format.

New Transformer Efficiency Standards Impact Global Market
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) amended the current energy efficiency standards for distribution transformers. The new standard will come into effect on January 1st, 2016.

The European Parliament has established new energy efficient standards for transformers installed in the European Union. The new standard requires that all transformers sold from July 1st, 2015 must meet the higher efficiency levels.

This market development, along with the pending DOE 2016 regulations in the U.S. market will have an impact on the demand for high-grade grain-oriented electrical steel (GOES) used in transformer cores. HPS, and other industry participants, have been informed of GOES price increases that will take effect in Q4 of 2015.
