Romancing Riesling in Michigan
|
Northern Michigan is known for producing premium Riesling. On the Old Mission Peninsula near Traverse City, Lake Michigan moderates the climate and allows cool-climate white-grape varieties such as Riesling and Pinot Blanc to thrive. Chateau Grand Traverse is the region's leading producer.
Chateau Grand Traverse has produced wine on the Old Mission Peninsula near Traverse City since 1974 and is now in its 2nd generation of leadership. The winery is noted internationally for its excellent Riesling wines and has won several international competitions.
A "whole cluster" Riesling means that whole bunches of grapes with stems and all are pressed without crushing. Made in a Kabinett style, the wine is slightly off-dry though definitely not sweet, showing excellent fruit and texture.
Selected as one of the ten wines as most exceptional of the year by the editors of Food and Wine Magazine, Michigan has definitely placed itself on the map of quality places for growing Rieslings. This example is sure fire proof!

"Floral and grapefruit aromas on the nose with green apple, quince and lime notes on the light bodied palate with good minerality and acidity amidst an abundance of fruit. A very well structured Riesling with great depth and length."

Tasting Note: "Pronounced notes of plum, wild berries and cherry on the nose followed by luscious flavors of dark berry, cinnamon and spicy blackcurrant gives this wine depth. This full-bodied Cab offers round tannins and a smooth finish."
| |
Tasting Note:"Spicy on the nose, with loads of fresh cracked pepper, spice box, and citrus peel aromas, the palate yields to a rich buttery toffee flavor accented by the spicy and grassy notes of rye and rounded out by the smooth vanilla flavors contributed by the oak and corn. The long, smooth finish closes with caramel and black tea flavors that linger. Magnificently complex, Henry McKenna Single Barrel is easy to ponder, and even easier to drink!"
