Dear Colleague,

Our hearts go out to the victims and the families whose lives were torn apart by terrorist attacks that took place recently in Paris, Beirut and Egypt. We will look for ways in which we can work with our colleagues across our network to address the underlying causes of extremism.

In this newsletter, you will see a number of events and opportunities we hope will be useful to you and your colleagues. I am pleased to announce that  CUGH will be holding a new training workshop in Washington DC, February 29 to March 1, 2016. This workshop will bring attendees up-to-date information on finance and compliance regulations as they relate to contracts and grants with the National Institutes for Health, USAID and the Centers for Disease Control. See our website after December 1, when registration will open.

Our colleagues from low-income countries face significant financial obstacles to participating in our activities and in particular, attending our conference. To overcome this we created travel scholarship grants that will enable presenters from developing countries to share their work at our next meeting in San Francisco. Below is more information about how you can support our colleagues to participate, learn, collaborate and share their work with us. Please donate if you can and share this opportunity with your colleagues. Your assistance is much appreciated.

Planning for a conference is going very well. Abstracts are currently being reviewed. November 30 is the deadline for applying for the Velji Awards and December 1 for our student essay contest. Please see here for more information.

Over the last two years we have been working with the Global Health Fellows Program to address the obstacles minority serving institutions face in training their students in global health disciplines. I am happy to share with you that we recently had a very constructive meeting led by North Carolina Central University and six other minority serving institutions.  Dr. Sharon Rudy from the Global Health Fellows Program and Dr. Sharon Marquez, CUGH board member and vice provost at Drexel University gave wonderful presentations at this working meeting. We will continue to collaborate with this group of universities and the broader minority serving institutions to ensure that students and faculty can access the opportunities others enjoy.

We are grateful if you can share this newsletter with your colleagues and across your networks.

Best wishes,
Keith Martin MD

Global Health Diaries recounts the reflections of medical students, residents, and physicians at University of Vermont College of Medicine and Western Connecticut Health Network engaged in global health electives around the world, including in Uganda, Russia, Zimbabwe, Vietnam, and the Dominican Republic. During these six-week global health rotations focused on clinical work as well as cultural immersion, participants gain a deeper understanding of medicine across cultures while giving back to individuals and communities. Their stories capture the ways in which they are challenged, moved, and inspired to fight for global health equity.

This past summer, 23 participants were selected for a global health elective. Read their stories here: www.uvmmedicineglobalhealth.wordpress.com

CUGH Fundraising Drive to Support Global Health Leaders In Low Income Nations

Researchers, faculty, students and implementers from low-income countries face significant financial obstacles to participate in our activities, especially our annual global health conference.

WE NEED TO OVERCOME THIS, BUT TO DO SO WE NEED YOUR HELP.

We are raising funds to support travel scholarships that will enable our colleagues from low-income nations to attend our conference in April. Supporting their travel allows them to acquire new knowledge and share their own. It gives them the chance to build partnerships vital to their countries and to the global health community as a whole. Without this support they are excluded from these critical opportunities.

HELP US GIVE THEM A SEAT AT THE TABLE.
