Knight Foundation Announces New Initiative for Libraries

The Knight Foundation has announced its next News Challenge - a competitive funding initiative exploring the evolving role and continued centrality of libraries in the digital age. The time frame for the News Challenge is very tight: on September 2, the foundation will announce an "inspiration phrase" to jumpstart imaginative thinking and design; proposals will be accepted beginning on September 10 and ending at 5:00 pm ET, September 30. The Digital Shift: Libraries at the Center

Library Journal invites your participation in a one-day free virtual conference on the future of libraries. The Digital Shift: Libraries at the Center takes place on October 1 and features keynote speakers Anil Dash, co-founder and CEO of ThinkUp, and Daniel J. New Research on Teens, Technology and Health

Today's teens need, want and seek out information to understand important health issues. Increasingly, they are using their online skills to explore questions and access critical information. A paper in the current issue of The Journal of Research on Libraries and Young Adults, titled "Issues in Teen Technology Use to Find Health Information," includes a literature review of studies of teens' online health information-seeking and discusses several issues related to teen technology use for seeking health information. The paper concludes with recommendations to insure optimal library services to address the health information needs of all teens.

SPOTLIGHT ON INNOVATION

Library in a Big Box

Colorado's Aurora Public Library is a 2014 Top Innovator for its outside-the-box Library in a Big Box. To meet growing demand for access to public computer technology, the Library created the Colfax and Chamber PC Center in side a Kmart store in one of the city's most diverse and economically challenged areas. The 600-square foot space has 12 public computers that are available eight hours a day, six days a week. In the PC Center adjacent to the store's check-out counters, people can search the Internet, print documents, take computer classes and get help/advice from a librarian. Read

The New York Public Library has created a personality quiz that readers can take to find out which beloved character from children's literature they most resemble. "We might be all grown up, but the characters from our favorite children's books will stay with us forever. Which one are you most like?" Find out now!

On September 13, the Arapaho Library District (CO) celebrates the opening of its new Sheridan Library Branch with a day-long menu of activities including tours, live music and a balloon program for libraries. Sheridan Library has many environmentally friendly features, including several skylights for natural lighting; community access to public transportation; and a high-tech roofing system that helps to regulate internal temperature and weather exposure.
