The economic news was mostly positive and focused on employment. Last week's report on first time unemployment claims revealed that hiring was bringing employment back to pre-recession levels. Jobless claims fell to 296,000, the third time in five weeks that claims were below 300,000. Total unemployed fell to $2.5 million people, the lowest since before 2009.

The Davis Companies' plans for renovating the Union Trust Building are going into a higher gear as the firm issued a request for proposals to general contractor/construction managers. A walk through is set for Sept. 2. In the bid market, the largest opportunities are the $15 million treatment plant and pump station work for the Ambridge Borough Municipal Authority and the $35 Milan Puskar Stadium CMR/GMP in Morgantown. WVU also issued a request for financing,developing and operating a new 400-room flagship hotel and conference center at the Evansdale Campus, due on November 13. Rycon Construction was awarded the $8 million UPMC Spine Center in Wexford. Ligonier Valley YMCA reversed course on its re-bid and selected A. Martini & Co. as contractors on its $7.5 million expansion. Joseph B. Fay Co. was awarded a $58.6 million contract from the Corps of Engineers for a lock wall and repairs to locks/dams near Charleroi. Construction started on the 25,000 sq. ft. expansion for Synergy Inc. Contractors were selected for Fox Chapel Golf Club and the $Moms tenant work.

Timothy Miller from Robinson & McEIwee, and Christopher 'Kip" Power, Mychal Schulz and Robert Stonestreet from the Charleston office of Dinsmore & Shohl have joined forces with Babst Calland in providing senior-level legal counsel in key practice areas including environmental, litigation and employment. The addition of the new attorneys and staff will double the size of Babst Calland's Charleston office which opened in 2011.
