Help Promote Mental Health Training for Law Enforcement - Act Now!
NAMI California is working to support legislation in Sacramento that would increase the training that all law enforcement is required to have regarding individuals living with mental illness, de-escalation techniques, and referrals to appropriate resources and supports.
But it's your voice that will make a difference in advancing these policies. We'd like to hear your family's experience with law enforcement - good or bad. What's working in your community and what needs improvement? Please send us your thoughts at [email protected].
If you are an affiliate leader, it's time to send in your support letters! We have sample letters for SB 11 and SB 29 available by clicking here.
Together these bills would:
Increase mental health training in the basic academy by 20 hours
Increase mental health training in the field academy by 20 hours
Increase training required for field academy trainers by 20 hours
Require 4 hours of continuing education in mental health issues every 4 years
Require the trainings to be evidence based or promising curricula that include: signs and symptoms of mental illness; de-escalation techniques; the perspective of individuals and families with lived experience; and community and state resources
The bills will be heard by the Assembly Public Safety Committee on June 30th, so please submit your letters now.
