AUDIENCE TO VOTE IN REAL TIME
AS AUSTIN FRENCH SINGS ON ABC

Austin French of Tifton, worship pastor/music minister at Tifton's Journey Church, will compete live at 9 p.m. Sunday on ABC-TV's "Rising Star."

"Rising Star," ABC's new singing competition, debuted last Sunday with singer-songwriter Josh Groban as

Austin French, at right, with TV host Josh Groban
host and singers Ludacris, Kesha and Brad Paisley as the celebrity experts.

The show has what it calls a "revolutionary" voting method: "Rising Star's" viewers can vote for contestants in real time through an app. If a contender gets a 70 percent approval (and the celebrity experts each have 7 percent of the vote), they're cleared to stick around in the competition.

French, 20, a Cordele native and Tifton resident, is also an online student at Liberty University studying evangelism ministry. A singer-songwriter, he also plays guitar, drums, piano and bass, and is a Georgia 4-H alumnus. He is engaged to be married and comes from a musical family; his mom taught voice and piano. French has been training since he was just two years old.

He posted online the other day: "So ... Some exciting news!! I AM ON #RISING STAR!! It's official -- watch this weekend at 9! And let's #raisethewall Georgia!! And America!!!"

To vote during the TV competition, one must first download the app and "check in" just before the singing begins. To get the app, Click Here!

MOODY AFB MAY BE TRAINING AFGHAN PILOTS SOON

For those of us in South Georgia, there's a strong chance that sometime next year an Afghan pilot trainee could be flying over our heads, The Washington Post reported Thursday, June 26.

Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta has been selected as the most likely option for the new Afghan pilot training location, the Air Force says. Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho, and Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., are also being considered as potential sites, but Moody is preferred because its facilities are "immediately available for the new occupants to move into" and is the cheapest option for the Air Force, The Washington Post reported.

"The plan to implement this temporary stateside training option will ensure the Afghan Air Force receives the support and training necessary to safely and effectively employ a platform for conducting air interdiction and close air support operations within their country," Air Force officials said.

The A-29 is a small, twin-seat turboprop aircraft that can carry a wide array of surveillance sensors and weapons, including air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles. It is designed to be easy to fly and hold up in high temperatures and rugged terrain. The Air Force bills it is as a "multi-role, fixed wing aircraft" capable of

"indigenous air interdiction, close air support...and aerial reconnaissance."

Once the host base is formally selected by September, the first Afghan trainees will arrive in February and will have a "limited presence" through 2018.

U.S. Congressman Austin Scott, R-Ga., says the Moody AFB selection is all but a done deal with only an environmental impact study pending.

"Moody Air Force Base has a long standing history of excellence, and I am proud that Moody has been chosen for the A-29 LAS program," said Scott of Tifton.

"Successfully completing this mission will allow our soldiers and airmen to come home from Afghanistan as soon as possible. The Air Force's selection of Moody solidifies its value and contribution to our nation's defense. The applaud the efforts and support that the South Georgia community and the South Georgia Military Affairs Council has given on behalf of Moody Air Force Base for this mission," Scott said.

Early voting begins this Monday, June 30, for Georgia's primary election runoff for several races.

The runoff election is Tuesday, July 22.

Locally, on the GOP ballot, Keith Barr and Richard Golden will vie for the District 4 seat on the Tift County Board of Education.

Also on the Republican ballot, Jack Kingston and David Perdue face each other for the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate to succeed retiring Sen. Saxby Chambliss.

And Richard Woods of Ocilla and Mike Buck are seeking the GOP nomination for state school superintendent, while Democrats Alisha Thomas Morgan and Valarie D. Wilson are seeking their party's nod for the superintendent post.
