Jennifer Worth came from a sheltered background when she became a midwife in the Docklands in the 1950s. The conditions in which many women gave birth just half a century ago were horrifying, not only because of their grimly impoverished surroundings, but also because of what they were expected to endure. But while Jennifer witnessed brutality and tragedy, she also met with amazing kindness and understanding, tempered by a great deal of Cockney humour. She also earned the confidences of some whose lives were truly stranger, more poignant and more terrifying than could ever be recounted in fiction.

The Bay County Genealogical Society raised money in 2008 for two computers for genealogical research at the Bay County Public Library. Recently, the Society generously donated $2,000 to the library's Local History Room to replace those computers.

Society President William J. Zehner and Corresponding Secretary Janice Moore Cronan presented the check to Rebecca Brown Saunders, Head of the library's Local History Room.


"We appreciate the support of the Bay County Genealogical Society," said Rebecca Saunders. "The new computers will mean faster access for patrons conducting family research."

The Bay County Genealogical Society is dedicated to the advancement, education, and promotion of family history research, and to the preservation and distribution of historical records related to Bay County, Florida, and surrounding areas.

The Local History Room at the Bay County Public Library collects and preserves the history of Bay County. The library houses print materials, artifacts, photographs, school annuals, city directories, telephone directories, newspapers and periodicals, as well as books on Bay County, written by Bay Countians. The collection also includes an excellent selection on Florida history. The collection is for in-library use only, and they are open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 4 PM.

Recently, Florida Memory launched Florida Memory Radio, a 24 hour streaming Internet radio station featuring a broad range of music from the Florida Folklife Collection. Available to listeners around the world, users can access the station on the Web at radio.floridamemory.com.

The Florida Folklife Collection is home to over 34,000 recordings of blues, bluegrass, folk, gospel, and world music, featuring such artists as Will McLean, Ida Goodson, Etta Baker and Doc Watson.

Florida Memory Radio plays these diverse musical selections around the clock, commercial free, allowing listeners to enjoy the rich audio resources of the State Archives of Florida. In the coming months, listeners will also be able to take Florida Memory Radio on the go with the new app.

Florida Memory is an ongoing initiative that promotes awareness, understanding and the use of the State Library and Archives' collections and services. It enables remote access to unique records that illustrate significant moments in the state's history.

The Florida Electronic Library (FEL) is a gateway to electronic magazines, newspapers, almanacs, encyclopedias and books, and the Ask a Librarian reference service.

Recently, the Career Information Center, 10th edition, was added to FEL. This 16 volume set provides the most current information available on careers in the United States. Job profiles cover the following: job facts; nature of work; work environment; education; licenses; certification and training; job outlook; similar occupations; and sources of additional information, such as books, audiovisual materials and organizations.

The Career Information Center provides valuable information to human resources professionals; managers and supervisors; and prospective and current college students who are trying to decide on a career path.
