Rebecca Saunders Retires After 46 Years with Library

Rebecca Saunders, the Head of Local History and Genealogy Services at the Bay County Public Library, retired in July after 46 years of outstanding service to the citizens of Bay County.

Rebecca Saunders was recognized for her service by Bay County Commissioner Mike Thomas.

Becky began her service to the library as a Girl Scout volunteer. She joined the Bay County Public Library staff on March 1, 1968, and has had several key positions, including Head of Technical Services and Head of Local History and Genealogy.

Becky's accomplishments include transitioning the library from card catalog to computer system in the 1990s, and working with her staff to fund and build a digital archive of over 16,000 historical photos which can be accessed online.

In 2005 Becky received the Outstanding Achievement Award in Florida Genealogy from the Florida State Genealogical Society, just one of many awards for her outstanding service and leadership.

An active member of the Bay County Genealogical Society and the Historical Society of Bay County, Becky has coordinated many wonderful events to encourage people to research their family history, including the very successful Genealogy after Hours program.

Becky has used her exceptional knowledge of Bay County to assist thousands of people over the years with their research, and has played a major role in the planning of the Panama City Centennial and Bay County Centennial celebrations.

The new Head of Local History and Genealogy is Laura Moree, who has been a reference librarian at the Bay County Public Library for three years.

Read an article about Becky's retirement in the Panama City News Herald  and view a news story about Becky shown on WJHG-TV Channel 7
Featured Series: Call the Midwife

Have you been watching the BBC period drama on PBS, Call the Midwife? Have you missed a few episodes and want to catch up? Or maybe you would like to read the memoirs on which the series is based? If so, we've got you covered!

Jennifer Worth came from a sheltered background when she became a midwife in the Docklands in the 1950s. The conditions in which many women gave birth just half a century ago were horrifying, not only because of their grimly impoverished surroundings, but also because of what they were expected to endure. But while Jennifer witnessed brutality and tragedy, she also met with amazing kindness and understanding, tempered by a great deal of Cockney humour. She also earned the confidences of some whose lives were truly stranger, more poignant and more terrifying than could ever be recounted in fiction.

Funds for Computers Donated to Library

The Bay County Genealogical Society raised money in 2008 for two computers for genealogical research at the Bay County Public Library. Recently, the Society generously donated $2,000 to the library's Local History Room to replace those computers.

Society President William J. Zehner and Corresponding Secretary Janice Moore Cronan presented the check to Rebecca Brown Saunders, Head of the library's Local History Room.

"We appreciate the support of the Bay County Genealogical Society," said Rebecca Saunders. "The new computers will mean faster access for patrons conducting family research."

The Bay County Genealogical Society is dedicated to the advancement, education, and promotion of family history research, and to the preservation and distribution of historical records related to Bay County, Florida, and surrounding areas.

The Local History Room at the Bay County Public Library collects and preserves the history of Bay County. The library houses print materials, artifacts, photographs, school annuals, city directories, telephone directories, newspapers and periodicals, as well as books on Bay County, written by Bay Countians. The collection also includes an excellent selection on Florida history. The collection is for in-library use only, and they are open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 4 PM.
